After buying some other wedding books and quickly returning I was feeling that I would be unable to find a book that was catering to my non traditional needs. I was marryed last year with my friends at city hall and on our one year aniversry I want to have the "wedding" I did not do last year with my family. I am a very creative person and was planning on utalizing that to have a low cost DIY wedding, but to tell you the truth I was totaly over whelmed and had no idea where to really start. The fun stuff like dress shopping, invitations, location, and honeymoon were taken care of but there is a lot more to this. After opening this book and reading the first couple pages I felt so much more centered and sure I could have a 60 person wedding on a $3000 budget. Like the other reviewer I would say this is the bible of wedding planning and if you are planning a small non traditional wedding this is a must!

THE Bible for Weddings on a Budget,
By Kerri "Kerri" (NH) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The DIY Wedding: Celebrate Your Day Your Way (Paperback)
I'm newly engaged and just received this book for Christmas from my sister. I'm planning a very small (35 people) wedding and want it to be casual, elegant, and most of all, budget-friendly. Without this book, I honestly would not have known where to begin. Places like The Knot seem to cater to large, formal, expensive weddings and I just wasn't getting much help there.
Kelly covers everything from DIY invitations and favors to food, drinks, and music. I love the real life stories that are scattered throughout the book and Kelly's tips on where to find things inexpensively. Bottom line, before reading this, the idea of eloping in Vegas sounded more appealing than planning a wedding. Now I can't wait to get started!

Good for beginning crafters, o.k. for the more experienced,

This book inspired me to create my own stationary for my wedding, but didn't do much besides that. I was already planning to make my own gown and decorations and there aren't very many suggestions on those topics.
I think for brides like me, who are already crafty and have ideas for their weddings, this book would be fun to skim at a bookstore, but it isn't essential. For brides who want to take on some diy projects and don't know where to begin, this book could be worth buying.

Too vague with very few suggestions,

I was hoping for more (or less).
There weren't enough new and helpful suggestions - much of the advice was of the sort I've read in magazines. There wasn't much in the way of resources, and just a scattering of recipes and step-by-step instructions - with very few illustrations! It wasn't at all about a budget (When in doubt, always buy more flowers! I think she uses the phrase "go overboard"), and it made a rather weak attempt at suggesting a few "green" ways of doing things (Use recycled paper!). But it wasn't very general either. It didn't have any real underlying message, and it wasn't very fun to read. As for indie? Eh. I highly recommend "Offbeat Bride" by Ariel Meadow Stallings. Less concrete suggestions, but a heck of a lot more inspiration.

Not very "DIY", advice felt too obvious,
By Liz (Cambridge, MA) - See all my reviews

This book didn't end up being what I was looking for in a do-it-yourself (DIY) wedding book. There are a few suggestions of specific projects - flower arrangements and snack mix for guests - but not as much as I was hoping for in 180 pages.
Also, many of the suggestions seemed too obvious to me. "You don't have to buy a new wedding dress - check vintage shops and thrift stores." And there is hardly any discussion of choosing where to have the event, a huge omission. This book is definitely not what I was looking for in a wedding guide. For real DIY projects, I recommend The DIY Bride: 40 Fun Projects for Your Ultimate One-of-a-Kind Wedding instead.

I ordered this book along with Offbeat Bride: Creative Alternatives for Independent Brides and Anti-Bride Wedding Planner: Hip Tools and Tips for Getting Hitched. Both of them were pretty lackluster, esp. the "Anti-Bride," but THIS one was 100% worth every dime.
This book consists of incredibly helpful advice (for everything from floral arrangements to picking out an officiant), very do-able projects, and it's all presented in a great, readable format. I can honestly say it's the best advice book, hands-down, that I've read so far for wedding planning, and I'd recommend it for anyone. One of the great things about it is that the content is appropriate for *anyone*, so I might spread the love to others getting married after us. I definitely recommend this book to any bride who doesn't want to dump a bunch of money down the drain, and even those who will dump just a bit of money down that drain once in a while (for sanity's sake), and are looking for some level-headed, non-wedding-industrial-complex advice.

Awesome book! I whipped out the little sticky note bookmarks and stuck my nose into this one!!
I couldn't put it down... my fiance probably got annoyed with all the "OHHH!" 's and "OH look, that's sooo cool!" 's and "Oh my, lets do that!"..... but he enjoyed it just as much as me. He said the "diy"-ness made it more customizable, and being that it was, he felt more apart of it. That he could make a choice or decision, even if it was the color of the glass for the ball jar vases. (Blue or Clear) Or cool favors that he or i could put a personal touch on. And it wasn't cookie cutter. We are 'tattooed', 'pierced' and 'alternative' people... but this book would work for anyone wanting to be really involved in their wedding. It's a lot of work... doing it yourself... but even if you don't want to 100% just if you made your own bouquet... this book is worth it. It also has website links for things as well. Great find. Love it.

This book is full of ideas and breaks the whole DIY wedding planning into parts I felt I could really handle. We're planning a smaller wedding at my parent's home and I'd have to agree with another reviewer that this book really speaks to those who don't want an outlandishly large ultra formal wedding. I enjoyed the book. I DON'T think everything in the book was super obvious information. Also, the resource links were handy. :D

I got a lot of good ideas and inspiration from this book. It was like all the things I have been searching for online (flower resources, how-tos on bouquets, etc.) wrapped up in one! The list of resources in the back is awesome!
