5.0 out of 5 stars Daddy G
One of the best things about the DJ Kicks collection is the way it allows the mixers/producers/DJs creating them to really be creative, and give props to their influences. This is a great mellow mix. It's nothing mindblowing, but definately some good listening even though I have most of the originals. Don't be fooled by DJ Dissapointed, this isn't a dissapointment. And for the record, Karmacoma appeared on Protection, not Mezzanine, as stated in his review.

One of the best things about the DJ Kicks collection is the way it allows the mixers/producers/DJs creating them to really be creative, and give props to their influences. One of the more outstanding examples of this is Daddy G's mix. Starting with obscure tracks from Willie Williams and Melaaz, he segues into a black box mix of Tricky's suffocatingly dense "Aftermath", and never looks back. He also gives plenty of face time to his day job in Massive Attack, featuring originals (including "I Against I" with Mos Def, only available on the Blade II soundtrack, and a barn-burner in its own right) and their remixes of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Les Negresses Vertes. With favorites by Aretha Franklin, Leftfield and Foxy Brown's anthemic "Oh Yeah" rounding out the mix, it establishes itself as a seductive reggae/dub/R&B/Euro conglomeration, and definitely a top-tier collection in a long line of prestigious mixes. Definitely one to cherish and listen to during summer nights.

I am a Massive Attack/reggae fan and my local record store guy suggested I try daddy G out. It's been in my cd player ever since. If you like trance, reggae, soul, r&b, with a little twist of euro underneath...all mixed together smooth deep and delicious ....you'll love this one too.

5.0 out of 5 stars looking back to days of trip hop, December 19, 2004

Daddy G, also known as a member of influential Brittish triphop group Massive Attack, goes back to his roots with this one. As triphop has been quiet for the past years, this compilation includes tracks mostly from years gone by. Many of the track back to the 70's. There are a lot of reggae and dub influences on this CD as these styles are an essential part of triphop.

There are a few exclusive tracks here. Like Tricky's Aftermath version 1, which is the original whitelabel version. Also Paul Oakenfold's remix of Massive Attack's "Unfinished Sympathy". Or Danny Krivits edit ot Aretha Franklin "Rock Steady".

To put it short, this is a very good compilation for anyone interested in triphop. I'm not a frequent listener of the style, but find this one extremly pleasent to have!

Love this. Have played it over and over. All these tracks bring back memories. I have been told this album is not being produced anymore. Can't think why.

Honestly, this is one of the best DJ Kicks CD in the bunch. All of the songs have a soulful atmosphere to them that is seamlessly mixed into a CD. Another should really pay themselves well and buy this CD either used or new. This CD is great.

Good tunes. A balanced mix of deep deep dancehall reggae, soul-house, & downtempo world music. I listened to this album non stop over the first 2 weeks I got it. Usually I stick to mp3 albums from amazon but based on what I heard I decided to order the cd (since its only available by cd) and wit was worth the wait. About half of the songs are on my favorite playlists and while a third of the album isn't exactly to my taste, those tracks are still worth listening to whenever I listen to the album as a whole. There is also a good dose of remixes of familiar songs so it still feels fresh to my ears. Get this album if you're a fan of these genres (though world music & downtempo/ambient is not represented as much as the other stuff.) In short, good heavy grindin sweaty smoky dancin in the dark music.
