This installment of the mighty DJ Kicks series showcases the talents of Stacey Pullen, the producer and DJ who is Detroit's Great White Hope, part of the generation of producers who took the plans laid by Detroit's innovators to the next level. The track selection for this mix reflects Pullen's production style; a nonstop barrage of tribal percussion provides the foundation for chords and melodies that build and release tension while constantly keeping the energy cranked up to 11. Stacey constructs the mix using three turntables, a rack of effects, and 24 top-quality techno records, creating transitions out of thin air and ensuring there's a surprise around every corner. And at the end, his own production talents are displayed on "DJ Kicks (The Track)," constructed exclusively for this compilation using samples from the mix itself. While it's intended for home listening, DJ Kicks is the next best thing to actually experiencing Pullen's engaging sets. --Matthew Corwine

5.0 out of 5 stars the best dance your a** off CD on the shelves today, July 20, 1999
What's your techno style? Detroit is the birth place of techno as we know it today. Many of the original DJs had to look within themselves for the inspiration to construct soulful music when surrounded by a post-industrial town verging on deconstruction. Stacey is a second generation by-product of this social experiment. His music is the result of years of fine tuned skill acquired by mixing with 3 or more decks at a time. I absolutely love this CD, and am desperately trying to get my hands on more of his stuff. This is the ultimate dance CD for people who like intelligent techno - or the real thing. BUY IT AND ENJOY THE AURAL ORGY OF SOUND!

There's more to life than beat-matching. If you find Sasha/Digweed albums boring as all hell, but you appreciate electronic music, you might like this one. Stacey is not the worlds most technically proficient DJ. He's more like the Jerry Garcia (on a very good day) of the turntables. He'll mess up and work with it, rewriting while playing. I think his stuff is brilliant and he doesn't really edit his technical miscues on this record, but uses effects and overdubs to play with them. Stacey attempts a lot of craziness that most DJ's wouldn't touch, don't take it to seriously. I suppose if your looking for uninterrupted beat to dance/trance to, you might be dissappointed, but give this one some time. It's a listen piece as much as a dancing piece. For me it was kind of like the difficulty of discovering Jimi Hendrix after being raised on Eddie Van Halen.
