5.0 out of 5 stars the best dance your a** off CD on the shelves today
What's your techno style? Detroit is the birth place of techno as we know it today. Many of the original DJs had to look within themselves for the inspiration to construct soulful music when surrounded by a post-industrial town verging on deconstruction. 3.0 out of 5 stars DJ Kicks: Pullen
I purchased Stacey Pullen's DJ kicks compilation several years ago and it has never gelled with me. I agree that the mixing and post production are messy, but there are some great tracks including May's classic "R-Theme". On the whole the mix is let down by Pullen's inability to build his tracks into something coherent.

What's your techno style? Detroit is the birth place of techno as we know it today. Many of the original DJs had to look within themselves for the inspiration to construct soulful music when surrounded by a post-industrial town verging on deconstruction. Stacey is a second generation by-product of this social experiment. His music is the result of years of fine tuned skill acquired by mixing with 3 or more decks at a time. I absolutely love this CD, and am desperately trying to get my hands on more of his stuff. This is the ultimate dance CD for people who like intelligent techno - or the real thing. BUY IT AND ENJOY THE AURAL ORGY OF SOUND!

5.0 out of 5 stars It's Great!!! If your open to it., January 31, 2004

There's more to life than beat-matching. If you find Sasha/Digweed albums boring as all hell, but you appreciate electronic music, you might like this one. Stacey is not the worlds most technically proficient DJ. He's more like the Jerry Garcia (on a very good day) of the turntables. He'll mess up and work with it, rewriting while playing. I think his stuff is brilliant and he doesn't really edit his technical miscues on this record, but uses effects and overdubs to play with them. Stacey attempts a lot of craziness that most DJ's wouldn't touch, don't take it to seriously. I suppose if your looking for uninterrupted beat to dance/trance to, you might be dissappointed, but give this one some time. It's a listen piece as much as a dancing piece. For me it was kind of like the difficulty of discovering Jimi Hendrix after being raised on Eddie Van Halen.

In the same way that you can't judge every mix CD in the rock or pop genre as being immediately suited to hearing in a venue, you certainly can't pin down mix compilations as only being suitable for hearing in a dance club. Stacey Pullen's DJ Kicks album is full of inventive use of scratching, sampling and mixing that sounds so much better on your home or car system, where you can appreciate the subtle sounds he's working. Comparing this to his live work is quite pointless: I've seen him live too and I listen to this CD as much as I do to his live sets I have on MP3, but with different ears on.

Bladerunner fans are in for a treat, as Stacey (obviously a fan too)works the main theme and dialog throughout the mix, giving the film's pundits a rare opportunity to hear some 80's Vangelis electro get updated into a more modern-day mix.

Overall, a mix that will take you on a journey, but not an epic dancefloor workout that you would expect from him up close and personal. With the right approach, this CD is wholly satisfying and heartily recommended.

I have seen Stacey spin live many times. He is execellent. This CD however is not. I am not sure what he was trying to do here. It sounds like he did not even try. bab bad bad.

its too creative in a very sloppy way. the post production is as bad as the mixing, the tracks range from excellent to just "ok" and that B.S. "dj kicks, the track" is a joke. stacey, i've seen you spin up & down the east coast, i know what you are capable of. this isn't nearly your finest moment. this cd is slop and disappointing. try again. and try harder. a huge let down. the sequence of tracks go nowhere either. this thing was thrown together. its ...
