Fantastic 80's disco and funk mix.,
By
This review is from: DJ Kicks (Audio CD)
A primarily 80's mix (I think one track is from 1979) that digs deep into funky, disco grooves of the 80's (not to be confused with 70's disco), and combines it with some similar synth laden, up to date electronic dance tracks. Gone were the classical strings and huge orchestrations of 70's disco, and in came the heavy synth melodies, while still retaining the soulful and funky lyrics. Chromeo finds everything from Canadian disco to the extremely rare funk/freestyle track Time to Move by Carmen, and sprinkles in some current electro house.Complete with every DJ Kicks mix is the artist doing a cover of a classic tune. On this occasion, we get Chromeo running the chorus of the Eagles classic I Can't Tell You Why through a vocoder. As eclectic and energetic as some DJ Kicks mixes before it, this one truly does not disappoint. It ranks alongside Booka Shade's DJ Kicks as my top two entries out of the last dozen or so in this mix series. A lot simpler and less diverse than Booka Shade's, but fulfilling nonetheless. They actually took their first stab at an 80's dance mix with Chromeo Presents Un Joli Mix Pour Toi in 2005, on the Eskimo label, but this tracklisting is a much better collection of tracks.

I like Chromeo, but this isn't Chromeo,

This review is from: DJ Kicks (Audio CD)
I'm a big fan of Chromeo, so I got this to be a completist. However, it's basically just songs they pick (which is what the DJ Kicks series is) and a lot of them are cheesy 70s disco songs. If you like that, go for it, but if you like Chromeo, don't.
