5.0 out of 5 stars Chicago style blues at its best, February 6, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: DJ Play My Blues (Audio CD)
I've got almost every Buddy Guy CD there is, been to numerous shows, etc.., so I feel somewhat qualified to tell you this is an absolutely stellar CD. It focuses on what Buddy does best, playing the guitar, not singing or having other "guest artists" taking up space on the CD. I highly recommend this CD to anyone who loves Chicago-style blues. Buddy is a virtuoso on lead guitar and this CD displays his talents in a way not matched by any of his other CDs.

Buddy Gu's discography is really variegated and includes album waving from deep electric blues to rock - blues to acoustic cuts. This one, that is a reissue of an album recorded in Chicago in 1981, belongs to the first category. JSP have re-mixed the old material to surround sound and the result is stunning. The quality of sounds is superlative, however the most important thing is that the material included in the recording is absolutely marvellous! As quite rightly John Stedman states on the linear notes "Buddy cuts loose on every track with no concession to commerciality or radio friendly", this is a deep blues album played for lovers of the style with no intention to impress the big audience out there. In my opinion this must be one of the best album ever recorded by Buddy Guy (for sure the best I know), marvellous guitar work and superlative singing in a sequence of great blues songs played with great feeling. An important contribution to the excellent final result is given, without any doubts, by the great band playing with Buddy. His brother Phil share guitar duty and sings on tracks 9 & 10, Doug Williams does a fantastic job on rhythm guitar providing the right texture on which Buddy and Phil can develop their solos, while Mike Morrison on bass and the Chicago veteran Ray Allison on drums, provide a very solid and precise rhythm section. Very highly recommended to all the "real" blues lovers!

5.0 out of 5 stars I would if I was a DJ!, December 8, 2004

Brilliant. Sound is crisp. Songs are great, esp. dedication to T-Bone Walker. All types of blues here, from funky stuff to slow stuff. Highly recommended and one of my favourites.

The only 'but' is that the last two songs are sung by Buddy's brother. The tribute to Tbone is amazing. If you got the hot licks video, well, here you can hear him playing that on CD. And She suits me to a T is among his greatest recorded performances.

5.0 out of 5 stars An overlooked gem, blues not rock, July 20, 2010
This review is from: DJ Play My Blues (Audio CD)
What a great surprise! I got this used as part of the JSP box of Buddy really cheap. Maybe I had low expectations as I had no knowledge of this, but it is a real blues record. Fans of the 1960's Buddy Guy will have cause for celebration, as he plays/sings in much the same style as he did for Chess and Vanguard - and even Delmark if you count the Jr. Wells recordings. Blues purists can safely get this and will enjoy it. If you have been frustrated by the the "modern" Buddy Guy (as I have), this is a treat. Of course it had been out on vinyl, but the sound on the cd is better and has been remixed as well as remastered. Ok, it's not perfect, but I would be elated to see him in concert and hear this!

I do like John Stedman's rememberance of how he got Buddy onto JSP all those years ago - he simply phoned Buddy and asked!

Don't be scared by the cover photo; this really is much more like the classic Buddy than the "Damn Right" Buddy of late. By the way, fans of histrionic guitar may want to listen first . . .

This is a live recording of Buddy in 1981 with his brother-Phil. It is in the SACD format and does it come out crisp and clear!!!! Buddy is great on this one[--loose and wild on the guitar-the way you want him to be all the time!! I have seen him several times now and back in the seventies and eighties. If you like those years of Buddy the best--I mean some long great guitar solos and that loose style--man you got to get this one. The vocals are great and his brother is good on the guitar and also sings two songs. Don't miss this one. 10 plus stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buddy's best cd ever!, August 2, 2010

This cd is one of the best blues guitar recordings that I have ever heard. I have four other Buddy Guy cd's, but this is my favorite one. The songs, Blues At My Baby's House, She Suits Me To a T, and The Garbage Man Blues, have some of the best guitar playing from Buddy, that I have ever heard from him. His brother, Phil Guy, also plays guitar, and he is a great guitar player to. This cd is from 1981, but it is well recorded, over 64 minutes long, and all true Buddy Guy fans will love it. I have seen Buddy live before and he puts on a great show. He usually has another younger guitarist with him, who will play up a storm to. Buy this cd, and you will not be disappointed. Let's keep the blues alive!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of Buddy's Best - and It's ALL Good!, December 15, 2008

I just counted my collection to make sure I was accurate: I have 13 Buddy Guy CD's plus his 4-disc collection, "I Can't Quit the Blues". Of all these CD's (every one of which is worthy of repeated listening), this is one of my top two, absolute must-have Buddy Guy favorites (the other being Buddy Guy's "Collected").

I am an admitted Buddy Guy fanatic. I have seen him in concert four times in three different states. I have most every DVD in existance where he appears. Buddy Guy, perhaps more than any other blues player ever, can make you FEEL his emotions and his raw, unbridled intensity through his earnest voice and masterful guitar. "DJ Play My Blues" surely gets Mr. Guy's point across in vivid color. You will listen to and feel this music over and over and over, again and again and again . . .
