Satisfaction,
By Jason! (Pennsylvania) - See all my reviews
This review is from: DJ Shadow - Live! In Tune & On Time (Keepcase) (DVD)
Well as you can see all the reviews are 4 stars or better! I've been a fan of Shadow since like 98 or 99, i'll try to give an objective review! This item is well worth the money for Shadow fans or trip-hop fans or DJ fans! I highly suggest you check out any single song by Shadow before you buy this item, his music is not very conventional to any genre...even trip-hop which doesn't really have a standard sound! If you like a song, you'll like them all and this product!
The DVD's main show is like an hour and half long live performance by Shadow! Its a cross section of every one of his albums, but songs mixed with each other in amazing combinations! With on-stage visuals (most are cued to the music) which are often editted to show on your screen clearly! You also get some other bonus performances of Shadow with Numark and Cut Chemist (I think) which is interesting! The CD is a shortened version of the same main performance on the DVD! I like this because i'd want to listen to it without a dvd player! This dvd/cd set is a really great reward for any of his fans in that you get to hear everything mixed in new ways while actually seeing how he does his thing! (Example: he blends What Does Your Soul Look Like 2 with Bloodstain) Then there's also the on-stage and on-screen visuals! Just in case anybody is worried about the sound quality, being that this is video of a live performance, fear not! The sound quality on the DVD and on the CD sounds as clear as studio production! As far as mildly interested people that aren't really fans of Shadow, I suggest you get any one of Shadow's albums or DL a song or two so you know what the music sounds like! Its not really conventional to any genre! *if my use of exclamation points makes this review seem less sincere, i apologize! please re-read and substitute periods for the exclamation points! Or for an entirely new spin on it, try using question marks at the end of each sentence! it really sounds less sincere that way!

This is the best of Dj Shadow,
This review is from: DJ Shadow - Live! In Tune and on Time (Jewel Case) (DVD)
Alright, Shadow may be a bit of an acquired taste, but this set is essential to anyone even remotely interested in hip-hop, breaks, basslines, or beats. In Tune and On Time is basically Dj Shadow's resume, because it includes the gist of most of his best material. 90% of the tracks are only 2-3 minutes in length, some of which are condensed from 10-14 minutes, originally. So, any repetition or slowness in the music is streamlined and eliminated. Not only that, but Shadow has mixed and matched to create a performance-in 5 acts-that maintains a flow so constant that it all feels like one, 2 hour track.
For those of you who own most of Shadow's material and are wondering if it is worth it, let me guarantee you that In Tune and On Time is like a whole 'nother album. Josh has taken the opportunity to add and subtract from ALL the material included in this set, injecting brand new samples and innovations so subtly and completely that they become new pieces altogether, the highlights of which are acts two, four, and five, which include versions of Blood on the Motorway and Napalm Brain/Scatter Brain that shatter all his previous productions. In Tune and On Time is a masterpiece because it rewards even more on repeated listens, where you can pick apart the layers and grow a whole new respect for the music. If you want to hear Dj Shadow at his best, this is all you need.

Watch it Non-stop...,

You Wouldnt think that watching a Dj would be entertaining, but Dj shadows Performance captured "In Tune and on Time" Is amazing. The energy from the crowd is like no other, the images go all too well with the music and he the disks special features are as well entertaining, (there is actually a hidden section on some of the making of music videos)AND on TOP of that, DVD is accompanied by a audio cd of the perfomance. In my opinion, Shadow is one of the most talented artists to hit the scene. This is a must have item just like anything else shadow is involved with.

I cannot understand why this guy doesnt get more attention. I'm a relatively new fan and I think hes one of the best dj's out there. He is a true artist, a creative genius. His work goes way beyond mere sampling, he creates new soundscapes and whole new compositions. The sound on this dvd is absolutely A class, I have a vast collection, and the sound of this ranks right up there with the new Led Zepplin and Nine Inch Nails Dvd which both are encoded with DTS, and Dj Shadow's dvd isnt, which makes the sound all the more remarkable. The Bass is floor shaking and he truly makes use of the rear speakers, I was enveloped with sound from the get-go. The music is awesome and this is the best I've heard him or any trip-hop/techno music, the 5.1 really brings out the music to life. The set list was awesome, it emcompasses all of his albums and his work with Unkle as well. One of my favorite parts in this was the visuals, they never get boring and they are really trippy, makes me wish I still smoked weed, on that note, if you do smoke weed or use x or acid, this would be the perfect thing to watch. I was thinking if you had a party like that , this would be the ideal thing to put on and have everyone zone out to. Enjoy!!

A real treat for Shadow fans,
This review is from: DJ Shadow - Live! In Tune and on Time (Jewel Case) (DVD)
DJ Shadow demonstrates how good he is as at mixing, sampling and scratching in a live performance as he is a reknowned studio producer in this audiovisual feast.
Here, you will find some great renditions and messing around of his work from all his main releases, some new sampling and great mixing. He really is a great live performer. The visuals that backdrop his show are very well captured here on DVD as we see his performing interspersed with shots of the visuals and the crowd. Well edited. The rest of the DVD includes a few other short snippets of other DJs including Cut Chemist doing what they do in live performances. Certainly interesting for fans of the hip hop turntablist genre. The added audio cd (disc 2) comprises (almost) his whole routine. It's a great shame though that it does not include his encore at the end where he belts out 'Never come home again', 'High Noon' and 'Midnight in a perfect world' - some of his greatest tracks and the perfect climax to this great show. Ran out of space I suppose. Pity.

Have you seen the DJ?,

Have you had a rare chance to see a DJ perform live and do his magic?
This is the DVD you should check out, even if you've seen SCRATCH (do a search for the DVD here), this video has the essence of how DJ Shadow creates a live mix of what he's mastered at home in the studio. The problem with a DVD like this is i'm not sure how people will view and enjoy it, if they haven't already heard a handful of Shadow's work. The genius, i feel, lies in how well he takes an assortment of samples from the gamut of his work and carefully orchestrates what sounds like a well-mastered piece of music. the hidden deal is that they are samples from his regular music that has been adjusted for BPM and tone to match eachother and actually work together in time. This is the genius. This is why Shadow fans that have his catalog already will enjoy this CD/DVD combo. He also throws in previews and new visuals that weren't available elsewhere (like the live video of him and Cut Chemit and DJ Numark performing PUSHIN BUTTONS which is the bonus live CD included with the limited version of Private Press). ...But then, if you've never heard any of Shadow's work, will you enjoy this? Maybe only if you enjoy DJ music in the vein of Remixers of old gems (like Cut Chemist, RJD2, and to some degree, Moby). I thoroughly enjoyed this.

i'm not going to bother talking about how great dj shadow is. if you are looking at this dvd you are probably familiar with his music. if you are a fan of dj shadow's albums or his work with unkle and quannum, you NEED to get this dvd. his live set is remarkable and the visuals are fantastic. you get both the dvd and the companion audio cd. the quality is excellent. again, if you are a fan of dj shadow you NEED to own this.

I was lucky enought to attend the San Francisco screening of this DVD last week with DJ Shadow himself. He was very proud of this concert film, and he should be! It captures the essence of his live show amazingly well. I caught two shows on this tour, and this DVD sent me back to those magical nights. All the songs, beats and samples were mixed "In Tune and On Time," meaning it sounded absolutely seamless. This is a must for any fan of good music!

Dj Shadow "In Tune and On Time" A masterpiece of a dvd in my opinion. Footage taken from his 2003 tour is 2 hours long of scratching, off the hook beatz, and an amazing show for all. If your into hip hop/electronica music with a trip hop twist then this is the DVD for you. I wish I could have been to the actual shows of the tour to experience the intense waxing for myself. I give this DVD a 10!!!
