Berlitz DJ uses the format of a radio show to teach children aged 8-12 a foreign language through songs, interviews, contests, and more. Youngsters love its use of pop, rap and dance music, and the songs help them to remember new vocabulary and phrases. The course contains an hour-long audio CD and accompanying booklet. It's just the right length - short enough to hold the attention of busy 8-12 year olds but long enough to teach the basics of a new language.

[Editor's Note: This is a combined review with DJ FRENCH.]--These beginner language programs contain the same material; they introduce basic words and phrases in dialogue and songs, as if on a radio station, complete with ads. The pop songs are catchy, the accents good, and the voices attractive. Translations are not always exact, but in any case, these programs can only supplement a language program--alone they teach little. Their content is geared to the interests and experiences of high schoolers, especially romance; some parents or schools may disapprove of occasional mild suggestiveness. This method should get information painlessly into student memories, as long its unpredictable audience doesn't find the transparent attempt to engage teenage concerns "lame."
