Great Children's Cookbook,
This review is from: DK Children's Cookbook (Hardcover)
A lovely book designed to have children learn how to cook healthful meals on their own.DK Publishing is known for their excellent books. This cookbook is no different. There are fantastic photographs throughout the book. Ingredients, kitchen tools and step-by-step methods are pictured to help children understand how to create each meal. This book is very easy-to-understand and is set up for beginner cooks. Another thing that I enjoyed about this book was the way that there were a variety of protein sources, whether it be vegetarian, lamb, chicken or red meat. There are health tips within the book to help educate children on the importance of eating a variety of healthful foods. Food safety tips are explained too. To help test this book out, I had my five-year old son look the book over. He found the pictures easy to understand. Being this book is designed for nine to twelve-year olds, I did need to help him read. But he did like the cookbook, and could follow the recipes. There are a variety of recipes in here. There are recipes for: omelets, granola, tomato soup, cheese and potato pockets, chocolate cake, apple pie, vegetable tart, falafel, Naan bread, fruit crisp, fruit pops, roasted chicken, fishcakes, lamb kebabs, roasted vegetable lasagna, a stir-fry recipe, a curry recipe and much more! If you have a child in the house that is interested in cooking, pick this book up!

Special Education Cooking,

This review is from: DK Children's Cookbook (Hardcover)
I'm a special education teacher for a 18-21 year old program. This book is excellent for my readers and non-readers. The pictures are real items, so there is no doubt what they are to use. The directions are clear and easy to follow and the ingredients are easy to find in a grocery store. There are a variety of foods and nothing that is to fancy to make. It is the most used cookbook in my room!!

The Best Cookbook Ever!,

Children's Cookbook..is such an excellent book. I really love this book because not only are the photos attractive, moreover everything in the book describes things thoroughly and meticulously. The steps are easy to follow. Another thing that is great about this book is when you don't know something, for example a particular tool or ingredient, it provides a picture with it--and not just an ordinary cookbook with just the words. This book is an amazing cookbook that not only children will be amazed by it but adults likewise. I really recommend it to all who loves to cook and loves to eat!

Good for Sweets,

My daughter likes this cookbook and book marked everything she wants to make. Unfortunately only 4 of the 17 items were something other than sweets. Somehow the "real" foods did not inspire her that much. She is a reasonably healthy but picky eater and I was hoping that having her make her own food would help motivate her to stop complaining about dinner. I think part of the problem is most kids want simple foods and if there are too many ingrediants mixed together, they won't eat it. Trying to find a way to get them to eat lean meats and fresh veggies is challenging as it is easier to fry them in fat or coat them in high calorie dressings to make them more appealing. I don't have any issues with the format and the images are nice but these days with child obesity, it would be nice to have a cookbook that inspires kids to cook real food. Also, it it gave some information on healthy choices (such as substituting brown rice for white rice etc...) it would be even better. So I gave this only 3 stars based on that - if it was a dessert cookbook, I would give it a 5.

This book seemed the best 'on paper' and from other reviews I decided on this one but ended up returning it, mainly because the recipes (ie: meals/ingredients) were not things we would normally eat or have around. Other than that fact it was excellent in presentation, readability for a young chef etc.

Excellent for an interested boy or girl,

My son, who was 7 when we bought this book at a school book fair, was already a good helper in the kitchen. He absolutely loves this cookbook and makes stuff from it all the time - he's now 10. while they are more complex than typical children's cook books, he can make the brownies from scratch all by himself, and actually most of the recipes are possible for him with my just coaching and guiding him. my favorite experience with him was the night we cooked for his babysitter - the lime-zest infused meatballs and the berry/whipped cream dessert where he learned to zest a lime with a zester (he's a pro now), how to press the berries through a sieve to remove the seeds, and how to whip cream by hand. he was so proud of being able to do that and she loved it! He's also a very active boy in cub scouts, soccer, etc., so it's nice for him to be developing this talent at the same time. thanks to this terrific book, he feels confident in trying new things from it.

Out of several cookbooks that I considered buying, this cookbook wins as the best. First, the formatting is clear and easy for children to understand. There are pictures for each cooking step. Secondly, the recipes are healthy and delicious. My daughter loves this cookbook.

Over the last 4 years my 3rd grader has checked this out of the school library more than a dozen times. The pictures are fantastic and she is enthusiastic about us trying "new" foods she wouldn't ordinarily try. She has become more adventuresome and eats everything she creates.
