Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-6-Although indexed and divided into chapters, this introduction to whales is more an attractive browsing item than a substantive work of nonfiction. The two-page entries cover such topics as evolution, physical characteristics, social life, reproduction, and more; headings such as "I am the Walrus" attempt to introduce a hint of humor into the text. Every page is laced with full-color photographs and drawings of marine mammals in a collage type arrangement, and every now and then a small cartoon or "funny bit" is inserted. The writing is often vague and imprecise, e.g., in the evolution entry, "sea otters entered the oceans relatively recently" is stated to explain their still-furry appearance and dependence upon land, but what does the author mean by relatively recently-last week? On the other hand, the brief explanation of the Greek terms for whales' fins-the pectoral (chest) and the dorsal (back)-is well done. Not for reports, but acceptable recreational reading.

This book covers more than just whales - it shows all sorts of marine mammals, including seals and walruses, sea lions and dolphins, porpoises and manatees.

Incredible photographs hold your child's interest, and the facts and details give your child an excellent understanding. This book also covers whaling, and includes a photograph of a whale that has been killed by whalers. It shows seal hunters, also.

There is a good section in this book that shows the problems associated with fishing and pollution. It talks about oceanographers and marine biologists, how they track and identify ocean animals, and how humans are helping and studying these species.

Its a pretty good book if your kids are interested in marine life but this is called Whales and only about half the things are actually about whales. I was expecting a whale book, if I wanted a book about all marine mammals, I would have gotten one called marine mammals. The pictures aren't great and the information is lacking. I wouldn't buy it again.

The entire collection is fantastic (not only this book, but any within the collection). I gave 5 books to my boys for Christmas and keep getting more until I finish the collection. DK books are particularly good for kids because of the ridiculous number of drawings, graphics, and photographs. Worth every penny.

I bought this book as a birthday gift for my grandson. He has loved it. I think the pictures as well as the information make this book a welcome addition to any child's library.

We purchased this book for my9 year old daughter, who really wanted to learn more about whales. She found it to be very interesting, with great pictures and lots of facts.
