While this book is intended for young readers (words such as "armistice" are defined in boxes set in the text), the text is thorough and nuanced enough to engage an adult reader. The book's subject is well-suited to a pictorial biography, and the well-chosen images are sharp and clear. A Lindy look-alike, Amelia Earhart's wonderful public image combined modest gentility, feminist self-confidence and competence, and a model's poise and grace. Happily, the image seems to have been thoroughly genuine, though the book makes it clear that there were better aviators.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, July 22, 2011
This review is from: DK Publishing: Amelia Earhart (DK Biography) (Paperback)
After watching Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian, I wanted to learn more about Amelia Earhart.

I loved this book- which is an example of a cross over children/YA title. It's a photobiography of DK, which slightly copies the Eyewitness style on a grader scale. Tons of pictures fill the book along with Earhart's life: including her struggles, her difficult life with her parents, and her passion for flying. The book ends with an in depth look at her last flight and possible scenarios for her tragic end.

Amelia Earhart was a social worker, a nurse, a fashion designer, and a feminist. Her life story amazed me.

5.0 out of 5 stars No better complete resource for any school project. And I learned a lot too!, February 7, 2011

This review is from: DK Publishing: Amelia Earhart (DK Biography) (Paperback)
My 2nd grader was doing a project on her and this is one of the BEST resources we used. She could read and understand most all of it herself. I was so impressed by DK Publishing and their book, I will always buy their book on all other figures we have projects on.
Great looking book as well. Glossy pages/photos, key info in special boxes. Perfect! A+++

This book provided a great factual account of all aspects of her life. My daughter used it to write a book report for fifth grade. Lots of great pictures made the book come alive and we learned lots of interesting things about Amelia, like the fact that she went to med school for a while and love to sit on the roof...

5.0 out of 5 stars East to the Dawn: The Life of Amelia Earhart, November 4, 2009
This review is from: DK Publishing: Amelia Earhart (DK Biography) (Paperback)
East to the Dawn is a superbly-written biography of Amelia Earhart by Susan Butler. This is a must-read for all seeking an in-depth view of the woman whose irrepressible spirit took her places where no man or woman had gone before. Amelia's life with her partner and husband, George Putnam, amidst her high profile career, is the basis of the new motion picture, "Amelia," starring Hilary Swank. As one of the producers of this film, I can attest to the significance of East to the Dawn, as a key source for the film. Butler's research reveals a fascinating relationship between Earhart and Gene Vidal (the father of Gore). As the daughter of an aviatrix, Susan Butler provides keen insights into what drives a woman to question the status quo and take risks beyond daredevil proportion. We also learn how Amelia impacted the world and why she remains an indelible legend and icon today.
