Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

What does it take to hold down a job in space? Linda, an astronaut on a space shuttle, describes all the ups and downs of her thrilling job in this Level 2 Dorling Kindersley book. It takes a lot of preparation and training to take a rocket trip to space. Linda has to pass medical tests, practice moving on a machine that mimics weightless space, and learn how to repair a telescope underwater (which is a bit like being in space). Once the shuttle lifts off, Linda floats around in zero gravity, eats food contained in sealed packets so it doesn't drift away, exercises on special machines, and dons a jet-propelled backpack that enables her to walk out in space and repair the broken telescope.

Dorling Kindersley's remarkably vivid photographs and illustrations and compelling text about space travel will motivate younger children to "learn to read--then read to learn!" This four-level learning-to-read series offers age-appropriate stories for all the early reader levels, preschool through grade 4. Children develop their reading skills, general knowledge, and love of reading. Level 2, for grades 1 to 3, is for children who are beginning to read alone. Longer sentences and increased vocabulary are meshed with lots of pictures and information boxes chock full of fun facts. (Ages 5 to 8) --Emilie Coulter --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars Space tale not just for kids, August 15, 2000
Linda is an astronaut. Her fourth mission involves repairing a telescope in outer space. Combining color photos and illustrations with a simple vocabulary makes this another winner in the DK Eyewitness Reader series. It can be easily accessed by those starting to read on their own. Fact boxes are scattered throughout the book and interesting space facts are on a separate page. The details of an astronaut's training and work are woven into a story which will hold the attention of almost any reader.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book!, January 10, 2011

This review is from: DK Readers: Astronaut, Living in Space (Level 2: Beginning to Read Alone) (Paperback)
I read a couple of these types of books to my 4 year-old son every night. This one was a little bit longer of a read than the others at this level but was very interesting and entertaining to him still. The books he enjoys the most are usually the Star Wars or Superhero Squad types, he hasn't been too interested at all in the other "real" topics. As I read it to him I threw in a little bit extra about the space shuttle and he asked questions about different things. This was a very educational book for him, which was a huge bonus because it was also one of the books he has been most interested in.

We found this perfect book to go with a lego reader book space adventure and of course a set of legos with a similar space exploration theme. Our nephew loved the gift for Christmas!
