This Level 2 book is appropriate for children who are beginning to read alone.

Ring! Ring! Ring! It is the fire alarm! A house is on fire! The fire fighters are on their way! Longer sentences and an expanded vocabulary make this series of 48-page books slightly more challenging: Level 2 is appropriate for children who have started to read but still need help. Information boxes full of background information will stimulate inquisitive minds. These books contain between 700 and 850 words, and they are approximately 70 percent pictures and 30 percent text. The Dorling Kindersley Readers combine an enticing visual layout with high-interest, easy-to-read stories to captivate and delight young bookworms who are just getting started. Written by leading children's authors and compiled in consultation with literacy experts, these engaging books build reader confidence along with a lifelong appreciation for nonfiction, classic stories, and biographies. 5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, fireman friendly book for early elementary age., August 31, 1999
By A Customer
An easy reader for beginning students, with high interest and photographs of real firefighters that make the book more interesting for children.

4.0 out of 5 stars I'm a fan of DK books, August 31, 2008
They're simple. They're informative. They're cheap. If your child is too young to read, they're perfectly good read-aloud books.

What more can you ask for when stocking your kid's library?

This is about a fire rescue. It's a little frightening for younger readers - after all, there's a fire and a kid possibly trapped inside - but nobody gets hurt so the fear turns into excitement.

I do wish, though, that the DK publishers would stop putting "fact boxes" on their pages. If the information cannot be integrated into the main story, it should be saved for a special page at the end. It's too distracting for early readers to be pulled out of the main text to read a little box on the side.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Reluctant Reader Loves This Book, June 29, 2011
I have a reluctant reader who happens to be obsessed with paramedics/firefighters. She LOVED this book, well enough to read it on her own. As a bonus, one of the firefighters is a woman named Liz, which is always a plus for my little girl in books about firefighters/paramedics. Recommended for boys and girls with limited reading skills and fire truck dreams!
