Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Amelia Earhart may be one of the most famous women in history. Initially recognized as the first woman to fly the Atlantic, she went on to perform many other amazing airborne feats, including a solo Atlantic flight, another from Hawaii to California, and, possibly her most legendary trip ever, an ill-fated attempt to fly around the world. This flight ended abruptly and mysteriously over the Pacific, when Earhart lost radio contact with a Coast Guard crew, the last people to hear her voice before she disappeared forever.

Angela Bull tells the story of the fearless aviator in Flying Ace, a Level 4 book in Dorling Kindersley's four-level learning-to-read series. Additional sidebar information (about prohibition, navigational tools, 1920s and '30s fashion, other aviator heroes, etc.) and a glossary are included for a thorough exploration of the times and places in which Earhart lived and worked. The multilevel reading program offers age-appropriate stories for all the early reader levels, preschool through grade 4. Level 4, for proficient readers in grades 2 through 4, utilizes rich vocabulary and more challenging sentence structures to encourage children to expand their reading skills and general knowledge, and to develop a love of reading. DK is known for its visual style, using dramatic photographs and illustrations and engaging text to motivate young children to "learn to read--then read to learn!" (Ages 7 to 10) --Emilie Coulter

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-4-Throughout this beginning reader, Bull portrays Earhart as having a somewhat reckless nature, for which the aviator eventually paid dearly. She flew in a plane piloted by hard-drinking Bill Stultz, she piloted a plane that she was incapable of handling, and she was not proficient in Morse code or radio operation. Earhart is also shown to be concerned about her appearance and perhaps manipulated by her publicity-seeking husband, George Putnam. Earhart may have been interested in women's independence, but her search for personal glory is more obvious here. Bull speculates that Earhart's plane ran out of fuel, but she also explores a few of the more sensational theories regarding her subject's disappearance. The style of this graded reader is clear and lively. The book begins with a fictionalized account of Earhart's childhood interest in flying, but the rest of it is straight narrative. The illustrations are particularly interesting, with many photos, maps, and watercolors. Sidebars with photos and captions expand on the main text or give a glimpse at the historical period. Patricia Lauber's Lost Star (Scholastic, 1990) is more detailed, but is for older readers.

This review is from: DK Readers: Flying Ace, The Story of Amelia Earhart (Level 4: Proficient Readers) (Hardcover)
This book is a well written and interesting biography of Amelia Earhart. It includes many photographs of Earhart and interesting additional information about the era in which she lived. My daughter was fascinated by all the information about how different the opportunities for women were in the first half of this century. Earhart's life story was clearly explained and the photos, newspaper headlines, and illustrations added a wonderful realism to the biography. This book was a terrific introduction to biographies for my third grade daughter!
