Book Description

October 25, 1999 7 and up2 and upDK READERS
Sophie and Jake take a journey they'll never forget, with the help of some computer software and a time traveler called Whirligig. The 48-page Level 3 books, designed for children who can read on their own, contain more complex sentence structure and more detail. Young readers will devour these kid-friendly titles, which cover high-interest topics such as sharks, and the Bermuda Triangle, as well as classics like Aladdin. Information boxes highlight historical references, trivia, pronunciation, and other facts about words and names mentioned. Averaging 2,400 to 2,800 words, these books offer a 50/50 picture-to-text ratio. The Dorling Kindersley Readers combine an enticing visual layout with high-interest, easy-to-read stories to captivate and delight young bookworms who are just getting started. Written by leading children's authors and compiled in consultation with literacy experts, these engaging books build reader confidence along with a lifelong appreciation for nonfiction, classic stories, and biographies. There is a DK Reader to interest every child at every level, from preschool to grade 4.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-4-A disappointing offering. In this beginning chapter book, Sophie and Jake, both bored with history, are asked by their teacher to test a new computer game, "Children Through Time." By typing in key words and clicking on the video button, the youngsters learn about ancient Rome, the Vikings, the Renaissance, the Gold Rush, World War II, and the Space Age. The history segments, which feature children living in the respective time periods, are loosely connected by commentary from the two students. "I wonder who's on the boat-and where they've been. Let's find out." Jake proceeds to click the video button. Interesting photographs and drawings do not make up for the fact that there is no plot or characterization here. It's like reading about two kids in front of a television, flipping channels. With so many good historical fiction titles available, there's no need to get this book. If you want a computer game, buy one.
