Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-These books help fill a need for simple, short, and graphically interesting stories for children not yet ready for full-length stories. The artwork is large, colorful, and well matched to the texts. One Smiling Sister, told in rhyme, introduces the numbers 1 to 10 through events and people in a preschooler's typical day at home and in school. Grumble-Rumble! follows a young kangaroo that skips breakfast to go out to play and is then frightened by what she thinks is a monster, only to learn that it is her empty stomach grumbling. In Ned's Rainbow, a little boy is sad when he can't touch the rainbow, so his clever mother paints one on his wall. Walsh's colorful rainbows on every page make the book lovely to look at, and the text is simple and realistic. Appealing characters and familiar settings and situations will make these titles popular with the preschool set.

More About the Author

Lucy Coats is a multigenre author of children's books. Her first picturebook was published in 1991, and in 2004 she was shortlisted for the Blue Peter Book Prize for 'Atticus the Storyteller's 100 Greek Myths'. Her first novel 'Hootcat Hill', was published in 2008 and had excellent reviews. Lucy was born in Hampshire and read English and Ancient History at Edinburgh University, which is where she met her husband, with whom she has two teenage children, both keen readers. Lucy read her first book of Greek myths at the age of seven, and has been hooked on myths of all kinds ever since.

Lucy lives in rural Northamptonshire and writes looking out over green fields full of sheep. She has a deskdog called Hero who generally lies between her screen and keyboard and is very good at encouraging Lucy when the writing is going slowly. Lucy has a website at http://lucycoats.com and a blog called Scribble City Central at http://scribblecitycentral.blogspot.com where she tries to give helpful (if eccentric) advice on the trials and tribulations of a writer's life. It has just been shortlisted for the Author Blog Awards 2010 along with Neil Gaiman and Paulo Coelho's blogs. She also has a Facebook Fan page at http://tinyurl.com/lucycoatsfacebook and a Twitter page at http://www.twitter.com/lucycoats which she visits strictly during coffee breaks. Lucy's latest 12 book series, Greek Beasts and Monsters were published by Orion Children's Books throughout 2010, and she is currently working on a YA fantasy novel and a series for 7-9 year-olds.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very sweet book, August 24, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: DK Toddlers: One Smiling Sister (Paperback)
This is a very sweet book with a delightful rhythm in it. Its about a little girl and two little twins on their way to school. It teaches vocabulary, numbers and interactions between siblings and student and teacher. My kids just love this one and we read it over and over again.
