This is a substantial collection of geographical information, supported with small but serviceable maps and a 20,000-entry index. Though this volume and the Oxford Encyclopedic World Atlas are packed with textual and graphic information, they're still relatively weak as reference atlases. The maps lack the detail, size, and depth of comparably priced atlases, and the other content can't match the depth and quality of information found in the best encyclopedias or sets such as the Worldmark Encyclopedia of the Nations. This volume is worth considering, but not as a true reference atlas. One difference between the DK and the Oxford is that DK relies more heavily than Oxford on graphic elements to convey information, while Oxford relies on text.

DK's World Atlas goes far beyond the usual call of duty for atlases. It also gives a realistic look at all of the countries in the world. I have had this book for about a year now. Each time I open it I discover something new. I have been interested in atlases most of my life, so I have seen quite a number of them. This one stands head and shoulders above the rest, and I will be first in line to buy the new version. I recomend this atlas for anyone. It is a valuable reference, especially for high school and college students. Indeed a wealth of information whose value outweighs its price.

I have always been pleased with DK publishing, and I have bought continuous updates of this book. I would reccomend it to any educational facility or a private book collector. It offers extremely valuable information about the world around us. Each section lists detailed information on the people, tourists, military, government, land, resources, prisoner numbers, everything you could ever want or need. A+ all the way.

This is an amazingly useful atlas of all the countries of the world broken down into various key areas. It is now being published under the title The Financial Times World Reference Atlas. After looking for an updated version of this title for years I came across it on Amazon.co.uk site and it is also available from the US site. Hope this info helps others who have been seeking a recent updated edition also.
