More About the Author

Jenna Hays McEachern grew up in the world of football. Her father was a successful Texas high school football coach, and both of her brothers were on the team. She has followed the Longhorns since she was nine years old.

Her latest book, "DKR: The Royal Scrapbook", published by University of Texas Press, was a collaboration with Edith Royal, wife of the UT coaching legend. It is an intimate look at the private life of two very public figures.

While pursuing her degree in photojournalism at The University of Texas, McEachern also majored in UT cheerleading. She worked for Jones Ramsey and Bill Little as an editor and go-fer in the Sports Information Department and was the editor for "One Heartbeat--A Philosophy of Teamwork, Life, and Leadership" and for "One Heartbeat II--The Road the National Championship," both written by Mack Brown and Bill Little.

Little and McEachern also collaborated on "What It Means to be a Longhorn", a collection of oral histories of some of Texas' greatest players. Her second effort, "100 Things Longhorns Should Know and Do Before They Die" was published by Triumph Books in 2008.

Jenna is married to former Longhorn quarterback Randy McEachern. They still live in Austin where they reared three near-flawless children--Bailey, Hays, and Lester Simmons.

I have read all of the books published about my father. They were all one-dimensional until this one. I've seen enough about football. The other books always left me wanting more of the real story which I knew so well.

In short, this is the book I have always wanted to see. The writing is excellent. The photo selection is superb.

This is more than football. It's the story of a generation. They aren't called the greatest generation for nothing, folks.

Young or old, male or female, football fan or not.... you will love this book.

Such insight into this TEXAS SON and beloved COACH. Coach Royal's incredible Journey led to his capturing The American Dream, becoming an iconic Coach in the process.
Using his legendary sense of humor and common sense, over-coming, perseverance and following True North, with pretty Lady Edith as his Wing Man, he met Life's challenges head-on and Finished Well.
For any TEXAS Lover, A "MUST ADD" to your Library!

My long-time friend, Rick Henson, suggested that I pick up a copy of DKR—The Royal Scrapbook, written by Jenna Hays McEachern with the help of Edith Royal. This amazing woman had quietly saved thousands of memoirs throughout the 68+ years of her marriage to DKR. The book chronicles a beautiful illustration of the Proverbs woman who saw herself as the helper suitable for her husband. While she loved being DKR’s wife and attended many events with him, she found complete contentment and joy in being the mother of his children and being responsible for running their household in his absence due to long work hours—all to make his life easier.

And she didn’t do it without suffering. Their 27-year-old daughter, Marian died after 20 days in a coma as a result of injuries incurred in a car accident. She told a friend, “When you lose a child, after the anguish comes a kind of strength. You realize that from here on out, nothing—not the loss of a parent, or a friend or even a spouse—can ever hurt you that badly again.” And then the unthinkable happened--their 29-year-old son, David, died less than 9 years later in a motorcycle accident. They have a surviving son, Mack, as well as several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

“Royal Scrapbook” is a wonderful collection of photos that documents their lives, and my favorites were taken by Rick Henson!

Everyone here in Texas loved and respected Coach Royal. Especially my Dad. For his birthday, there was no question as to what I wanted to give him.
