Stable base for heavy sharpening,
By
This review is from: DMT B8250 DuoSharp DuoBase - bench stone base (Tools & Hardware)
I use this base to hold 4" DMT whetstones and sharpen chisels and planes. These heavy items can move around an unsecured sharpening system. Plus the DMT stones are used wet which makes the table top slippery unless you are a lot neater than I am.I was very satisfied with the plastic base. It never moved even when placed on wet formica. The elevated height allowed me to guide the tool along the edge and to flatten the chisel backs without hitting fingers on the table top. Eight rubber washers slip over plastic feet. Sounds flimsy, but its not. I would recommend gluing the rubber feet on at some point just so they don't get lost. It also lets one store the diamond plate without scratching other surfaces or damaging the plate bottom. The diamond stone came with a non-skid pad, but it would not hold a piece of plate glass still unless the table top was perfectly flat (and most are not). The main disadvantage to the holder is that the stone cannot be easily flipped over. One plastic end must be removed and then reinserted. Maybe a 15 second job, but if you are going to use both sides in succession, it's inconvenient. I wish I had bought a coarse/fine combo instead of a fine/x-fine. Money well spent.

I ordered this and a combination diamond stone but they arrived loose in a box. Fortunately their individual packages prevented any damage. However the duo base requires 12 rubber cushions and only 10 were in the package. I sent two emails to DMT about this and received NO response. Not even an acknowledgement to the emails. I was able to find similar cushions and the stone with base work like a champ. I tried to make Amazon aware of this but their website will only let you 'return' items. I only want to make them aware of the lack of communication from the manufacturer and this review area is the only apparent avenue to do that.

Works with 10" Duosharps.,

Just to add my 2 cents, this base works with the 10" duosharp as well. I received rather vague results when trying to find the answer to this, but it does work. I recommend the use of the provided grip pad to ensure that the duosharp is rock solid on the base. I could've asked for the base to be more sturdy, but it performs just fine.

I must admit I was expecting something heavier and better quality. This is made out of plastic with rubber contacts to prevent it from slipping. I placed my duosharp stone on it and placed the whole thing on my tile counter tops. The rubber feet do slip after the countertops get wet (which they will since you need the water to lubricate). The little rubber mat that came with the duosharp stone I bought was better. I did like the fact that it raises the stone so it makes it easier to use.

This is a handy accessory for sharpening!,

This base really helps make it easier to sharpen with bench stones. It provides lots of knuckle clearance and you can change out your different sharpening bench stones. It fits all types 6"x2" sized sharpening stones. It's great that it also has a feature on the underside for hand held sharpening of hard to hold tools..axes, that type of thing. It was good investment to add versatility to my tool bench!

This is just about the perfect height for sharpening all kinds of stuff. So far I've sharpened kitchen knives, pocket knives and straight razors with this. It enables one to get an excellent bevel on a straight and to carefully control the bevel on kitchen knives and the like. I've not used any kind of jig, it's all by hand. The rubber feet on the bottom hold the stand steady and the rubber feet under the stone anchor the stone in place. Finally, there is a handle on the bottom of the stand that allows one to hold the base with whichever stone you might require and move the surface over a stationary item. I've done this with waterstones in order to get a flat surface. Works great, I'm very pleased.

Does exactly as promised...Holds your duostone whetstone securely in place during use. Added plus is the height of this thang allows a large handed person like me to sharpen a long kitchen knife all the way to the hilt.

I am glad that I bought the bench stone base. I think the elevated surface makes sharpening easier. It holds the stone rock solid and the little rubber pads keep it from sliding. There are plastic tabs that snap in place to remove and replace the stone for a different coarseness or to clean it. I assume that they will not fatigue and snap off. If I get a couple years of use it will be worthwhile. If I get more it is a bargain.

If you have the Duosharp stones, you will want one of theseto keep your stone elevated and your knuckles off the table. really adds a good dimension for comfort to work with. Now if DMT would make an accompanying clamp/guide that rolls on a table top you would have one of the best systems around.

I bought this because I had bought 2X6 diamond sharpeners, but they were a hassle to use. This brings them up 2" and it is so much easier!!!It holds the sharpeners well! |
