Pros:
It cuts fast. It is large and flat. Great for reprofiling thick kitchen knives.

Cons:
Relative expensive. Normal sharpening does not require this and reprofiling thin blades does not.

I bought it for $68. The Extra-Extra-Coarse (XXC) stone is not a cheap stone. it is noticeably more expensive than the Extra-Coarse (XC) stone. This stone can be used to lap and flatten Japanese waterstones and to reprofile knives. Nevertheless, one can use the cheaper XC stone to lap stones and to reprofile many kitchen knives. I have a XC stone and the reason I bought this stone is because this XXC can do a much faster job for reprofiling thick blade knives, like my usuba bocho. Due to the amount of metal, a thick blade knives can easily take 10 times more effort to reprofile than a thin blade. This XXC stone help.

Keep in mind that just because this XXC stone can speed up the profiling process for a thick blade knife, it may lengthen the overall process for a thin knife. This is because this XXC stone leaves very deep scratches on the knife blade which need to be polished out.

I hate all the time spent straightening chisel and plane blade backs, as well as repairing a badly nicked edge. This extra-extra coarse "stone" speeds up the process quite nicely. I suspect it will also be great at tuning a plane in gross need, though I haven't had opportunity to try it yet.

I have tried many methods to flatten Japanese natural and synthetic waterstones and this XX DMT is by far the best. It is easy to use, fast and easy to clean and store. Can't ask for more.

Mostly used to flatten waterstones. It performs this task well: quick, thorough , without leaving too deep of scratches on the surface of the stone. I have used it for some knife edge repair, which it does well. I reserved a star because it does seem to be wearing in an unusual pattern, and I cannot be sure how long it will remain effective at its current wear rate. It may well last for a very long time and the change may be aesthetic. But I cannot be sure.

I have had a chance to use this a few times and think that overall it is a good product. This item is listed as being 120micron grit which upon touching it feels like my 250 grit whetstone. It does what it is supposed to do and is very flat. The advantage this product has over my Japanese whetstone is that it doesn't need to be leveled. The disadvantage is that with vigorous grinding and sharpening of your knife, the metal sediment collects and I feel that it decreases the cutting ability of this item. Consequently, I end up having to frequently wash the sediment off before going back to sharpening. Over all, it does what it's supposed to do which is sharpen my knife. If you don't like the hassle of doing whetstone maintenance, then get the DMT products. They are good products, but I still feel that my Japanese whetstones give me more results for my efforts. I will still use my DMT for leveling my whetstones when I'm done using them though.

I had high hopes for this plate, my original intention was to use this a lapping plate for my water stones. After the first use I felt a huge difference in the girt on the plate but it was still working like it should. I also used the plate for sharpening some badly damaged knives i noticed after several uses that the plate wears very unevenly I have one end that feels like 220 sand paper and the rest of the plate feels smooth. Now about 6 months later this plate is pretty much useless to me. Also inspecting this plate with a 60x loop 2 months in I could see a considerable amount of diamonds missing compared to the much rougher end of the plate. Save your money and get a better product.

I've been using this for a couple of times now and let me tell you it really can remove a lot of material quickly for a diamond plate. But it can not beat a new wet and dry 120 grit sheet stuck on a piece of glass. I bought this specifically to flatten the backs of my chisels and plane irons hoping that it would be faster. But its not as with any other DMT diamond plates I've got. So if that is your intention I would recommend sticking( pun unintended ) with the sand paper on glass method.
