4.0 out of 5 stars Good value, but not all you'll need
This DMT diamond rod fills a niche between a sharpening steel (for daily edge realignment) and a whetstone (for wholesale metal removal to recreate the edge). It's easy to hold properly, takes off a little bit of metal on each stroke so it's easy to control, and you use it dry so it's not messy. This tool is relatively inexpensive and solidly made in USA. I've used...

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this one!
My daughter purchased one of these for me. I have had three different sharpeners of this type, but this one was the worst by far. At first, it did a great job, but after about ten sharpenings almost all the diamond dust is worn off. I have gone back to an Eze-Lap 8" round sharpener that I have had for about five years. Much of the dust is worn off this sharpener also,...

I've used mine on about 10 knives (12' of edge) and it shows no sign of diamond loss, so I'm hopeful it'll last a good while.

The 600 grit version creates an edge that I find to be too coarse, even after touching up with a sharpening steel. If you like your edges smooth and sharp (like a razor) rather than micro-jaggy (like a very fine breadknife), you'll need a fine stone to finish or might consider the 1200 grit version instead.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just as advertised, February 12, 2010

I bought this for my husband, who is a chef, for Christmas and he is very impressed with it. I wasn't sure if it would be good enough for him, but he says it does just what he wants and is just as good as much more expensive sharpeners.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good honer, might want something finer for a sharper edge, December 5, 2009

This honer will keep your knife sharp, but if you want to keep your knife ridiculously sharp, you should look at their finer grit steels (either the extra fine diamond steel or the ceramic steel).

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid and Commercial Grade, August 14, 2008
This review is from: DMT DS2F 12-Inch Diamond Steel Sharpening Rod, Fine Grit (Tools & Hardware)
This is not a flimsy kitchen store tool. It is very solid, commercial grade kitchen tool. Besides fitting my hand very well, I appreciate the steel/ diamond composite material the steel is made of. I have ordered several styles of DMT steels and have been very happy with the quality product that they provide.

Will sharpen quickly and efficiently, however in the wrong hands can just as quickly ruin an edge.

This steel seems to work much better than other steels I have had for keeping an edge on the knives.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sharpening Rod, March 1, 2010

This review is from: DMT DS2F 12-Inch Diamond Steel Sharpening Rod, Fine Grit (Tools & Hardware)
Ordered this sharpening rod as a Christmas gift per my spouse's request. We've since used it many times - and it works great. Our various kitchen knives now slice like new. All the complaints about dull cutlery have ended.
This 12" rod has good heft to it, the handle grip feels good, and the non-mar tip lets you rest it on the countertop without fear of marking the surface. A few swipes down the rod and the knife has a nice, sharp edge.
We're very pleased with the quality of this DMT product.

Much of the dust is worn off this sharpener also, but only after hundreds of knives being sharpened. I will but another of these and never switch again.

We wanted a steel for my son. He was thrilled to death with this steel. The instructions helped him understand how to use it and was by far the best buy for the money.

4.0 out of 5 stars Decent, November 5, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: DMT DS2F 12-Inch Diamond Steel Sharpening Rod, Fine Grit (Tools & Hardware)
I like this steel alot but it could have been designed a little better, maybe a small handle so it will stay in my knife bag.
I suppose this is meant to be hung up in a kitchen so if you plan on carrying it in your kit you may want to reconsider.
