EXCELLENT PRODUCT!! This is the exact same whetstone as the DMT W6EP which sells for $17.00 LESS! he difference is the case. Thi one comes in a wooden box (which warped when I got it wet). DMT W6EP comes in a plastic case. The choice and the $17.00 is yours. EXCELLENT PRODUCT!! DMT W6E 6" Diamond Whetstone Sharpener,Extra Fine with Hardwood Box

I've always kept the household knives pretty sharp, and it's always been a chore accomplishing that. Two or three times a year I'd drag out the old Carbarundum stone that's been in the family for decades and spend hours sharpening knives. This DMT whetstone puts this chore in a new dimension. Now each knife takes about three minutes and they all go back in the drawer with edges Jeffrey Dahmer would have envied. These things do not come cheap, but if you place much of a premium on your time and you want sharp cutlery, your money will be well spent.

Great stone for the sharpest blades,

I've long been a believer in a sharp knife edge. All a dull edge does is frustrate you. I purchased the DMT 6" Extra fine whetstone sharpener with the hardwood box. Now, all my knives, from personal carry to kitchen, have a surgical edge. The edge is obtained quickly simply by following the included directions. This stone should last a LONG time and I am happy I invested in it. I would recommend it to anyone who is serious about obtaining the best edge on their blade they can.

I've used these stones before, and they work so well I finally decided to buy one. Like most stones they are a bit expensive, but there isn't anything that will substitute. I bought the fine grit, but will likely buy the medium and coarse some day. Just not today. One at a time makes the "bite" not as hard on the pocket book as buying all three at one time.

I have always carried a knife in my pocket, and after losing 3 to TSA jerks, I almost got out of the habit. I dug up an old swiss amry knife, and began to work the dull blade. Using various sharpeners, I ended up with a decent blade. Then I got teh diamond whetstones. Wow. Like magic. Truly a great way to get an edge on your stuff.

Too small and too unstable,

The stone (if you can even call it that) does not fit snuggly inside the wooden base, so everytime you make a pass with the knife it wobbles, changing the angle of the knife undermining the sharpening effort. Als, the surface is too small and I wasn't able to have long consistent passes to sharpen my knife (which only has a 6" blade) effectively. I imagine it will be almost impossible to sharpen 8" or 10" knives with this sharpener. Eventhough I used a DMT guiding clamp, it was still very difficult if not impossible to have consistent and fluid strokes. I feel a part of my lack of good results was my inexperience at sharpening with stones, but the small surface area and instability of the device are facts and major factors. My other concern is the durability of the stone. It has just a very thin non-continuous coating that does not instill much confidence in me for its durability. It appears that DMT has been able to spin the argument around by not coating the entire surface, claiming that it's better this way since the metal shavings will be trapped in the non-coated areas. Frankly, I am not pursuaded by the argument that manufacturing a better product was the reason DMT chose this route. I feel it was to keep the production cost at a minimum! After having seen the thing and using it, I feel it is exhorbitantly overpriced. While sharpening my knife, I sprinkled a few drops of water on the surface of the stone. Although I thoroughly wiped off the wooden base before putting it away, it is all warped now, looking like a 3-legged dog. And the two pieces do not fit anymore. How they can justify several additional dollars for a box that's made of junk wood is beyond me. Truly unconscionable.

I love this whetstone. I've had a fine version for years and just added the extra fine to take my kitchen knives to the next level. Easy to use, doesn't require oil or water, but I like to use water nonetheless. But skip the hardwood case. You can save $10-$15 and just get the cheap plastic case. You'll take it out of the case to use it anyway. They left the opening on the case big enough that the stone slides back and forth about 1-2mm as you use it, making it difficult to keep in place on a hard surface. Just put it on a damp towel or in a vice and you're good to go. |
