Product Description

Amazon.com Review

Diamond is the hardest material known, and as a result it can be used to sharpen everything from tungsten carbide and steel to ceramic, glass, and stone. This two-sided whetstone is coated with a perforated mesh of extremely durable monocrystalline diamond that sharpens much more quickly than a regular whetstone and won't form grooves or hollows over time. Because the DuoSharp lies flat and provides a wide surface, the whetstone works particularly well for wide-bladed knives. Light pressure strokes are all that are needed, and if lubricant is desired, use water not oil.

Color-coded for quick reference, the blue-dotted side of the 8-by-3/8-by-2-5/8 stone features a coarse, 325-grit (45 micron) surface, while the red-dotted side features a finer 600 grit (25 micron). The coarse side restores dull or damaged edges, while the fine side, used regularly, keeps an edge razor-sharp. DMT makes a stand for the whetstone (sold separately) and will replace free of charge any product found to be defective. --Ann Bieri

I've had a set of these stones for a couple months now. I've found them to be great for truing up hand planes and for sharpening chisels and plan blades.

This review is from: DMT W8FCNB 8-Inch DuoSharp Bench Stone Fine / Coarse - No Base (Tools & Home Improvement)
I purchased all 4 grades of this bench stone. Quality is better than a whet stone, thus the two stars instead of just one, but they still leave much to be desired for someone who is looking to put a straight, consistent, razor sharp edge on quality woodworking tools and/or cutlery. These stones are not the tool of choice for someone who is anal retentive like me regarding their tools. Over the years I've tried many "sharpening systems", and I've finally found one in the Tormek T-7 that meets the sharpening results that I desire. I have a 20X illuminated 6" magnifying glass that I use while sharpening my tools so that I can see the cutting edge of whatever I am sharpening. I don't care how steady you try & hold your tool while using these bench stones, the edge will be rounded and inconsistent because it is impossible to hold & move a tool or knife across the stone at exactly the same angle on every pass, especially if you need to flip the item over such as when sharpening a knife. If you are the type of person who stores their kitchen knives in a drawer without any blade protection, or you put your woodworking tools together in a toolbox instead of a sheath, then these bench stones will work just fine & dandy for you. My bench stones now reside in the outdoor shed for use on my yard & garden tools. But if you desire a long lasting, consistently razor sharp edge on your woodworking tools or knives, please do yourself a favor and invest in the Tormek T-7. If you do, I would highly recommend that you also get the Japanese waterstone for the Tormek. Just be sure to use it LIGHTLY while sharpening because it can easily spall if you apply too much pressure. And always sharpen your fine kitchen knives with a dual bevel to help the edge stay sharp for long periods of time. I would also recommend the use of a mouse for honing the edge of your razor sharp knives.

4.0 out of 5 stars small problem, March 25, 2011

I like the product as far as its ability to sharpen cutting tools.
the one problem I had is shortly after receiving it it fell off my work bench
onto a concrete floor and the colored plastic button was lost. Now I have no indicator as to which
surface is on which side. I can't tell by feel as they seem the same to me. I will have to find
someone with sensitive touch to help me identify the different abrasives.
