In DNA Arrays: Methods and Protocols, Jang Rampal and a authoritative panel of researchers, engineers, and technologists explain in detail how to design and construct DNA microarrays, as well as how to hybridize them with biological samples for analysis. In step-by-step instructions, these experts detail not only how to attach or print arrays on various matrices, but also biological sample preparation (DNA and RNA), hybridization conditions, signal detection, probe optimization, different printing technologies, and data collection and analysis (bioinformatics). Additional topics covered include genotyping, sequencing by hybridization, antisense reagents, HLA-DQA typing techniques, and gene expression analysis. Forward-looking and state-of-the-art, DNA Arrays: Methods and Protocols provides all investigators engaged in biological and biomedical research the full range of effective, readily reproducible microarray techniques needed to analyze on a large scale the many different genes and gene sequences now available from the Human Genome Project.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"DNA Arrays - Methods and Protocols presents microarray technology as an extremely useful tool to better understand modern molecular biology, particularly DNA sequencing, gene expression, genetic mutation and polymorphism. ... The main focus is on a very detailed presentation of the available methods in microarray technology. Experiments are explained carefully and systematic attention is paid to possible variations and particular difficulties that may arise. ...Useful tips are offered: as to how to perform direct comparisons of gene-expression patterns between two tissues or two different experimental condition... this book will surely be viewed as one that represented a stepping stone into development of the technique."- Department of Chemistry, University of Toronto "DNA Arrays: Methods and Protocols is both a useful introduction to DNA microarray technology as well as a handy source of protocols for specific applications of the technique. The book covers a broad range of topics related to DNA microarrays beginning of DNA arrays to the analysis of the data that is produced....This book offers many practical insights into DNA microarray analysis that should prove to be useful to scientists interested in implementing this technique in their research....the reader should be able to easily follow the progression of the material through the different stages one would need to perform to design a microarray experiment. This book will be of interest for those readers seeking practical information about DNA array methodologies." - Biotech Software & Internet Report "...of interest to postgraduate students and postdoctoral researchers who have begun work on DNA arrays and need a broader view of the field, together with useful tips for solving practical problems." - Angewente Chemie International "DNA Arrays-Methods and Protocols presents microarray technology as an extremely useful tool to better understand modern molecular biology, particularly DNA sequencing, gene expression, genetic mutation and polymorphism." -The Analyst "...a comprehensive guide to DNA microarrays...provides a starting point where one can begin to tackle the vast amount of new literature on the subject." -The National Journal of India

From the Back Cover

Microarray technology, which permits the rapid, simultaneous, and highly sensitive analysis of large numbers of biological samples, is now coming into widespread use for advanced research on gene expression, mutation analysis, proteomics, and gene sequencing. In DNA Arrays: Methods and Protocols, Jang Rampal and a authoritative panel of researchers, engineers, and technologists explain in detail how to design and construct these DNA arrays, as well as how to hybridize them with biological samples for analysis. In step-by-step instructions these experts detail not only how to attach or print arrays on various matrices, but also biological sample preparation (DNA and RNA), hybridization conditions, signal detection, probe optimization, different printing technologies, and data collection and analysis (bioinformatics). Additional topics covered include genotyping, sequencing by hybridization, antisense reagents, HLA-DQA typing techniques, and gene expression analysis. Rounding out the technical presentation are three chapters that review the history of microarrays, the ethical ramifications of genetic analysis using DNA arrays, and the business aspects of biochip technologies. Forward-looking and state-of-the-art, DNA Arrays: Methods and Protocols provides all investigators engaged in biological and biomedical research the full range of effective, readily reproducible microarray techniques needed today to analyze on a large scale the many different genes and gene sequences now available from the Human Genome Project.

The individual articles are fine in this collection but there is no singular focus. The collection skews more potential applications than lab practicals. You'll want to look through the table of contents to determine whether you need a particular chapter(s) before getting this book.

I like Schena's MICROARRAY BIOCHIP TECHNIQUES somewhat better as a broad overview for beginners. Although there is some redundancy, at least the reader can compare slightly different approaches to the basics.
