(Note: I removed a star from this product rating on March 19, 2014 due to problems at start up. Please read my update for details.)

First of all, I am not a commercial driver. I am the typical guy who drives a car to get to places. Many years ago, I was pulled over and harassed by a police officer. I was also involved in a car accident in which I was rear ended, but the guilty party blamed the accident on me. I have also been nearly killed on the highway by reckless drivers. In order to protect myself in the court of law (should I ever need to), I decided to invest in a dashboard camera. In all of the aforementioned cases, if I had had proof of the other person's wrongdoing, I would have saved myself a lot of grief, stress, and financial loss.

I researched dashboard cameras for many months prior to purchasing this item. At the time of purchase, it was $175. It was A LOT more than what I wanted to spend on a dashboard camera. I was drawn to the 1080 HD picture quality of the camera, and the wide dynamic range (WDR) feature. Upon reviewing the videos of this particular camera on youtube, I decided to give it a try. I purchased this model, along with a 32 GB microSD card. I have been using this dashboard camera for roughly a month now, and it has been an excellent investment in my peace of mind.

The picture quality is excellent. At night, however, the picture quality is only as good as the amount of light that's available. There are videos on youtube which provide samples of the video quality. The WDR feature expands the field of vision to capture more of the left and right sides of the road, something like a panoramic shot. The camera allows for either continuous recording, or loop recording (i.e. records in 1, 3, or 5 minute blocks).

>>> Added Video Clip: 1080p "FHD" video was converted to 720p in iMovie clip, then uploaded - so originally better quality than you are seeing here<<<

Order received in 12 days despite Amazon notification email that it could take 20-30 days for delivery. Very easy setup. Small and discreet size dashcam. Works great day and night - great HD picture. I have ordered and returned a couple dash cams on amazon that were supposedly HD, but they were just junk... This camera is worth the 12 day wait and price. You can get it for a few bucks cheaper on the e-prance.com webpage, but you have to have PayPal.

*** update: some memory cards seem not to work well... Check "dash cam talk" (google it) they have a great write up about cards that work great in their "forum". The ScanDisk 32G micro Sd card I ordered on Amazon works great (SDSDQU-032G).

August 19, 2013: I didn't buy this camera here. I got it in 4 days from a supplier in NYC via eBay. I'm posting my info here because I always check the reviews here first before buying anything. And I buy from Amazon whenever I can.

I agree with everyone that this is a great little camera. After researching all the dashcam sites I landed on this model. The only questions I couldn't find the answers to were about Mac compatibility. It works great with my Mac.

When I first got it, I wanted to plug it in and try it out at my desk. The car cord plugs into the lighter, and a mini-usb socket on the camera. It delivers 5 volts at 1 amp (1000ma) to the camera, not 12 volts. Since it comes with an additional 3-foot mini-usb cable, I plugged that into an iPad charger and into the camera and it fired right up. I plugged in a Lexar 300x 32gb micro usb card Lexar microSDHC 300x 32GB UHS-I Flash Memory Card LSDMI32GBBNL300R and it recognized it right away. (BTW: Buy good cards. It's worth a few dollars extra. Some write faster than others. This one is primo.) After clicking around the menus and reading the broken-English instructions, I had it all figured out. It's not hard at all.

Now to the part I was worried about: Hooking it to the computer. I shut the camera off, unplugged it from the charger, and plugged the same cord into the USB port on my computer. The camera turned itself on immediately and displayed the menu item "Mass Storage." I clicked confirm and it appeared on my computer screen as a 32gb hard drive. It had a folder for the videos like you've seen before when you mount camera memory cards. The videos are in .mov format.

I received the camera within the expected time frame. The outer box looked like it rolled its way here from China but the inside product box was okay. The camera looks good. The plug is a little wobbily. I guessed how to hook it up after buying the needed memory card (thank you online reviews for suggesting the Sandisk 32mg). I assumed it was working okay and went on my way. I have no idea what the symbols and different colors blinking mean. I've been using it a couple of weeks and thought I'd finally check to see if it's even working (yes, I'm an extremely busy person). I got out the pamplet of instructions and it was pretty much useless. I still have no idea how to change the settings after trying for over an hour. It takes you through no steps on how to get to anything. Someone really needs to write a instruction book for dummies... please! It has stuff in the box I still don't know what it's for (a sticky mat... huh?). I finally figured how to play back on my computer with the Sandisk in USB adaptor. Daytime - it seems pretty clear but I can't make out license numbers unless they are stopped at light and right in front of me. The cars off to the left and right were illegible. The night vision is fair but yet again the plates are illegible. That was one of the things I thought was most important. I know if some of the settings were tweaked it might perform better but I can't figure out how to change anything or what the changes would do anyway. I guess I'm stuck for now just using the factory settings. This is the first dash ever owned so I can't compare it to others. It is all plastic. Lens has no cover so I found a small velvet bag to store it in as protection. It's kind of a pain to connect and disconnect as the 12v connector is super stiff.Read more ›
