Product Description

The DPx HEST/F 2.0 is a German D2 tool steel folder mated to a U.S. made titanium alloy frame with a durable American G10 scale assembled by the crafstmen at LionSTEEL® in Northern Italy. The HEST/F was developed as the direct folding version of the HEST fixed blade knife and was dubbed the 2.0 because there were a number of significant modifications made to the original design of this brutal use folder. The goal was to increase strength without adding weight and to directly address concerns about ease of opening, strength of lockup and usability. Patents Pending The knife boasts the following features: Blade is German D2 tool steel polished then milspec phosphate coated Tumble finish 6Al4V Grade 5 titanium alloy frame and spring frame lock Patented LionSTEEL RotoBlock® system American-made G10 handle scale Removable stainless steel clip and glass breaker (comes with replacement smooth head screw) with integrated lanyard attachment 1/4" hex driver Unique wire stripper, jimping and hard lashing points Thumb grip/bottle opener Dimensions: Open length: 7.63" Closed length: 4.93" Cutting edge: 3.10" Titanium alloy frame thickness: 0.165" G10 scale thickness: 0.165" Knife includes a unique, collectible Mr. DP skull adjustment tool which is used to adjust the pivot tension and remove/replace the glass breaker screw with an included flat screw. The tool may also be used as a handy EDC by itself.

The thickness of the spine of this knife is a little thick for slicing stuff.

The angle of the edge is rather steep. This makes it good for cutting stuff like fence wire without damaging the edge, but not so good for bushcraft or whittling type of things where a fine edge would be preferable. If you want to say clean a fish, slice bread, or whittle some type of tool in the woods this is not your knife.

I like the blade shape because it has a nice point on it, although the blade is a little short. I mean if you are going to make a blade this thick at the spine, why not make the blade a bit longer so you could use it to split wood for a survival fire when it is wet??

The frame lock on this knife/blade could be polished a bit because couple dozen times it has locked open and I had to use a screwdriver to pry the liner lock loose so the blade could be folded again. Luckily this has always been around home and not backpacking or something where I didn't have tools.

I would rank this knife poor for actual hostile environment use due to the short blade and problems with being unable to undo the lock sometimes. I think something like a multi tool or SAK would be better. I think it's a good knife for cutting things that would dull a normal sharper knife with a finer edge like wire.

The most use I've got out of the knife though is the bottler opener part. Although even the bottle opener is more difficult to use and somewhat inferior to a boy scount knife.

I have read a lot of negative reviews on this knife. I also have read more positive reviews about this knife. I ended up picking up this knife to use for my EDC. I have had this knife a couple days and it is great. In the pocket you cant notice this knife. It is a lost lighter then i thought it would be, which isn't a bad thing. It is comfortable to carry and it has a deep pocket clip witch I also like. The knife is sturdy and has a solid lock up that I like you can tell it's built like a tank. It is stiff opening but I also think that is a plus because the knife has good tolerances and I don't think it was made to be a flick opening knife. While the blade is open their is no play. The blade is shaving sharp out of the box. The fit and finish is perfect on the knife and the blade is perfectly centered. The gimping or wire cutters was also thought out and works great for grip and the other function of wire stripping. The knife is also a crowd pleaser with many of my friends who liked the knife and thought the bottle cap opener was "cool." The knife is comfortable in the hand and the ergonomics are great. I like the looks of the G10 handle and they are have super grip. The titanium side looks awesome and the finish is top notch. The glass breaker is also a great addition, i hope i never have to use it though. Overall this knife is definitely worth the money. I also have heard DPx gear's customers service is top notch. Also the DPx skull tool that comes with the knife is also a cool little tool for EDC. This knife has now stole my pocket and will continue to be my new EDC knife.

PS I will update this review in a few months if I feel the same way about this knife.

Here's why I love it, based on carrying it daily for the past nine months:
It's unobtrusive due to the low rise pocket clip- only the clip and the tip of the glass breaker stick out of my pocket. I just bought the new model clip directly from DPX, which is black and smaller than the big shiny standard clip, which makes it even less noticeable clipped in my front pocket.
It's extremely overbuilt- and because of that I never hesitate to use it. I had to cut away the thick plastic carry handle on a car battery recently and I never felt like it might break despite the heavy downwards and sideways pressure.
It's relatively small and lightweight- one side of the handle is titanium and the other is G-10, and the lightness of the handle balances out the weight of the very thick blade. I wear size large gloves, and for my hand size, the handle is thick enough and just long enough for a very firm grip held either normally or in a reverse grip. Also, the blade isn't very long, which for some reason makes it less scary to my friends and co-workers- I think it looks more like a tool than a weapon.
It has multiple secondary uses- most importantly the glass breaker, which could be a lifesaver in a car accident. Also, the bottle opener works reasonably well and the lanyard hole accepts standard hexagonal screwdriver bits.

Here are the problems I've had with it and how I fixed them:
The knife used to get stuck open if I flicked it open too hard. I had to use a plastic pen or similar object to push the liner lock back open.

Item delivered earlier than expected! This is a sturdy tool! The description/design speaks for itself, it's a thick, light-heavy weight working knife! Came hair removing-razor-sharp out the box! I would say it's not a night-out-in-town EDC, but more of a "do-work" knife. I bought it for deployment and work because of all it's extra features (the wire strippers get plenty of use). Too early to tell how long it'll hold its edge, but I have a spyderco tri-angle sharpener so I'm not worried. The locking mechanism is genius! No blade-play at all! Really don't see any negatives about it...but if I have to give it a "con" it's the titanium scale can get slippery with sweat, but the flip to that is the G-10 scale sticks to you like a magnet. Overall I'd recommend this to anyone looking for a dependable rugged beat-it-up EDC folder.

...damn, this knife made me 'retire' my griptilian...spyderco stretch...Manix2...
