Book Description

2007
From Publishers Weekly In the tradition of grand-scale SF sagas that explore the potential of human evolution, this densely plotted and intensely thought-provoking opener for Hamilton's Void trilogy takes place roughly 1,000 years after the events of 2006's Judas Unchained. Humankind in the 34th century has effectively conquered mortality, but many humans are still searching for existential transcendence, and a growing number believe the answer can be found inside the Void at the galactic center. Once thought to be an enormous black hole, the Void, which supposedly contains an entire micro-universe inside an impenetrable event horizon, slowly devours stars to sustain itself. If left unchecked, it will eventually consume the entire galaxy. When the technologically augmented telepath Inigo begins experiencing revelatory dreams, his shared visions ignite a mass pilgrimage to the Void, which some believe will trigger the apocalypse. Readers can expect big ideas and big story lines as well as big cliffhangers at the novel's conclusion. (Apr.) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. This review is from: THE DREAMING VOID [THE VOID TRILOGY, BOOK 1] BY PETER F. HAMILTON (Hardcover)
I will keep it simple... buy every book this man writes and read them in order. Rather than write a 10,000 page book, Peter Hamilton has broken it up into many volumes with The Dreaming Void being one of the latest.

As with the Ender Series, this is one of the later books in a series which keeps referring to events and people that are alluded to in earlier volumes. The fun thing about this is that when you get to this novel, you are part of the "inside" group... you already know a lot about the references made and feel almost a sense of nostalgia.

Wrapped in political intrigue as well as sci-fi, the Dreaming Void covers a grass-roots movement by religious pimgrims to travel to an unknown area of space similar to a black hole. This area has been the originator of numerous dreams received by people within the group, including the founder who has fled the scene. The catch is that this area is expanding, consuming whole planets, and like a black hole gives no true feedback as to its true inner nature. Additionally the Void appears to be sentient, responding to attempts to explore it by increasing its expansion rate, which causes concern and violent opposition by people outside the Dreaming Void cult.

For fans of Alan Dean Foster or Arthur C. Clarke, rejoice: I have yet to read a novel by this writer that was a letdown, and he is prolific.
