4.0 out of 5 stars Tried it and liked it, May 10, 2008

This review is from: DLC DRF-14 Macro Ring Flash Dedicated for Canon eTTL2 Digital Cameras (Electronics)
I do not own this product, but rented it along with the Canon 100mm Macro for the weekend. The business had just purchased the flashes and had not yet put them into use. Their main reason for purchasing them was price.

I mounted the lens to a Canon 30D and mounted the flash. The flash mounts to the lens easily and is up and running quickly. I then headed out to the yard to give a try. I have done very little macro photography, so this was a learning experience all around.

To cut to the chase, I was pleased with the both the lens and the flash. The light from the flash was even and balanced. I shot mostly in manual at f11 or higher. Recycle times are bit slow, but the flash worked well. I can't attest to its durability, but I can attest to the quality of products I purchase from Adorama and have always been pleased.

I gave it four stars so as not to leave the impression that it is of the caliber of the full featured Canon flash. I don't think it was designed to compete with that flash, but was created to fill a niche for those of us without deep pockets. Don't buy this flash for critical professional work, but for day-to-day shooting I believe most users will be very pleased.

Update on this review, after 6 months of casual use the ring flash now has a dead spot, I know flashes are not meant to last forever but this one was not a workhorse, very casual use. I now wish I had bought one of the canon ones instead.

**************
I bought this ring flash last week when I bought my mpe-65mm, I was a bit reluctant at first, specially since I was originally thinking in getting the MR-14EX or the MT-24EX, after using it for a while I've come to this conclusions:

-Has not lamp assist which is a good thing to have from the mr-14ex that this one doesn't have, in low light conditions and specially with a mpe-65 you keeping increasing the macro you loose a lot of light on the viewfinder, try going above 2x at night can be quite challenging to get a focused shot, specially since the ring itself blocks some light, or if you are using a lens with autofocus it might not do well in low light conditions.

-The connector to the hotshoe it's not the nicest, if you are not careful might not last long, can get loose pretty easy.

-Can't adjust anything on the flash, no menu no nothing, the few adjustments have to be done with the camera.

-Can be switched on or off way to easy, take off the batteries when not in use.

-No wireless, no interaction with canon flashes like the m4-14ex can, so there's not chance to sync it with another speedlight and use it as a fill light for example.

-It's a good bang for the buck, if you shot with decent light, will hardly use it with any other flash, the amount of light it's good, recharge is good, if you break it you won't cry, for what you pay for a Mt-24 you can get 4 of these.
