A Fascinating and Insightful discussion between five of Frank Zappa's most well known drummers. Terry Bozzio, Chester Thompson, Chad Wackerman, Ralph Humphrey and the charming Ruth Underwood reminisce on the experience they each had in various ensemble's serving under Maestro Zappa's baton. Conversations of the Black Page, Frank's conducting style, Mahavishnu Orchestra/Billy Cobham and details of the individual auditions each of these extremely gifted players underwent getting into Frank's band are enthusiastically and humbly told. If you are a Drummer, Zappa fan or just someone with an interest in music you will certainly enjoy this film. Incidentally the running time for the discussion is 106 minutes as opposed to the 60 minutes in the DVD specifications listed above.

For The Drummers and persons who enjoy music made with four drumkits (unfortunately Ruth Underwood was not part of the proceedings) The drumming portion runs 42 minutes in length and is nothing short of revelatory noodling. Fantastic to see these four improvise (assuming this was improvised) a piece of drumming music while giving it texture and dynamics. Gazing at the DW and Yamaha drumkits is no eyesore neither. No best drummer here they work so impressively as a mini-zappa gamelan quintet.

There is no official Frank Zappa music or archival clips in the film and it really is just a "discussion" about the whole challenging and rewarding experience. One wonders whether or not the producer's at Drum Channel approached the Zappa Family Trust at all for permission to use clips & music which seem appropriate at certain times during conversation but it doesnt sorely need it and most watching this specialty DVD will probably be very familiar with the music in question.

I hesitated before buying this DVD -- I'm a guitarist, not a drummer. Furthermore, the times I've been forced to fake my way through a bass or keyboard part, I've been able to do it. But I've NEVER been able to deal with percussion, not even a drum kit -- my brother, who IS a drummer, finally just hung his head and declared me unteachable. Apparently, I just do not have the (natural?) physical coordination that allows a human being to play a 4/4 part with the hands and a 5/8 with the feet. Or something like that.

HOWEVER ... I am SO GLAD I finally broke down and bought this. It's an amazing disc, featuring some great parts. Here are the most significant:

1. Roundtable discussion featuring ex-Zappa percussionist Ruth Underwood along with ex-FX drummers Ralph Humphrey, Chester Thompson, Chad Wackerman and Terry Bozzio. Warning: It may sometimes get a bit heavy-going for non-percussionists. Bozzio also serves as moderator, but I wish he'd been more aggressive about turning the conversation when and where he wanted it to go. Instead, he's more of a "see what happens" kind of guy. It works when everyone is feeling relaxed, but the minute there's any tension in the room, you can feel the unease, and the need to redirect the discussion goes unmet. Also, Chad Wackerman is such a quiet guy that he often has to be drawn out. Still, how much can you complain about this?

2. An actual drumming demonstration featuring everyone but Underwood. OK, I may not be a drummer, but even I'm not too stupid to realize this is fantastic. As with the verbal conversation, Bozzio seems to be the driving force here; the difference is he knows when to assert himself and when to draw back and let someone else take the spotlight.

this dvd is pretty much what you'd expect: players discussing zappa and their experiences with him. i was hoping for a little more. i was hoping for demonstrations of the drum work on zappa's material. instead when they are at the drum kit they just kinda jam. that's ok but not worth the price of this dvd. overall, i'd say there should have been someone other than bozzio moderating: someone who knows how to make it interesting by bringing out interesting points.

If you are a Zappa fan, this is a must, a roundtable discussion with his percussionists. Was totally amazed and loved the stories they told on each other, all in a love that only a brother-ship could have. Frank was a musical genius and the care he took to select each drummer just goes to show his true musicianship and deep vision. Watching their combined playing in the second half of the DVD is sheer amazement!

Where is Vinnie????
I was wondering the same thing myself, Vinnie certainly left his mark in such a short amount of time with Frank. I can only assume he was off on tour with Jeff Beck, they must have asked him.
