The Camaroo Compact II has a good size for my Lumix GF2 including the lenses and flash. But the case is thin, flimsy and has not good enough inserts to make it work for me. I went for the Clik Elite Capsule (Small) that is unfortunately a little bigger but built stronger and has better inserts.

I've been using the original Cammaroo insert for a while and have been very pleased with the fact that it can turn any bag into a camera bag, but also allows me to protect additional gear in carry on bags while traveling. The only downside to the original insert was that the vinyl exterior gave it a very low marks for fashion. Also, the top was just a flap that folded over, and while nice because it could easily be folded back out of the way, it left exposed gaps on the edges.

When I saw this new, improved model, I decided to give it a try as well. It's a little smaller, but the build is far superior, and the material looks more like what you would think a camera bag should look like. It's a little smaller in size, but I've been able to fit my Nikon D40, 18-55, 55-200, and my Nissin Di622 flash in it. The top flap is fitted, so when closed the whole package is tight and secure. The insert is a single piece that can be attached to any of the four interior surfaces, but it works best when both ends are attached to the same side of the case, making a "loop" to drop your camera lens into. Any additional lenses will simply slip in beside the camera nice and snug.

Even though the top flap is fitted, it is possible to fold the flap backwards and around the bottom of the case so that you could insert it into a messenger bag with the top open for easy access. This is a great case for carrying a small DSLR with an extra lens or flash, or just to provide a safe place for up to three medium size lenses. A great additional to any bag collection.

I have a Timbuk2 XS (Xtra Small) Classic Messenger that I love, and it looked like just the perfect size to carry my camera gear to the park or around the city, but there was no way to keep everything from clunking into everything else. Enter the Camaroo Compact dSLR camera insert. This insert fits right into my XS Messenger bag with about 3 inches of extra room in the bag, perfect for tucking an external flash in between the insert and the end of the bag. The insert holds my camera with attached lens, and one other large lens snugly. With a smaller camera body and/or lenses (say, a Canon Rebel with the 18-55m lens) you could probably fit the camera with attached lens, plus 2 more lenses inside the insert.

The insert itself is well padded, as is the divider. The lid folds closed neatly, and stays that way. However, I'm deducting a star from the rating because the lid doesn't fold back nearly as well as it closes. Due to it's construction, it doesn't fold flat down the back of the insert, causing extra bulk in my messenger bag since I actually don't want the insert lid in the way when reaching in my bag for the camera.

I was looking for a DSLR camera bag that does not look like camera bag. I found the best way is to use an insert in a regular messenger bag. After looking at some camera insert (some are quite expensive) and experimenting with homemade insert, I ordered the original compact insert DSLR Camera Insert - Compact (Free Shipping) and use with my Diaper Dude diaper bag Diaper Dude Diaper Bag, Black It's a perfect fit and I have been extremely happy with it. I was able to carry my Olympus E620 body and three lenses easily. There are plenty of pockets in front to carry other accessories. The original insert does not have a top cover. I was thinking about making a cover when I saw the new Compact II insert and I immediate ordered one. (the free shipping is also great). The Compact II is about the same size as the original but appears to be sturdier. It fits in my Diaper Dude bag just as nicely and now there is better padding on top. The Olympus E620 with Zuiko 70-300mm lens fits tightly in the insert. I am not sure if other camera body with larger lenses would fit in this compact insert. Overall, it is a solid product and is well made. The price is reasonable and there is no shipping charge.

As noted in the title, this is a really good alternative to carrying a expansive camera bag. I am able to carry this in my messenger back with some other stuff that I normally carry around without looking like a tourist on an outing.

As for the insert it self, it is well padded. It comes with a divider/camera holder piece. This allows me to carry my apsc camera with a prime lens and additional small lens. In addition, I have my lens cleaner/blower. I have not tried it, but you can probably carry a full frame camera without any other stuff.

Materials used seem to be made of good quality fabric. It has a velcro strip at the front holding the lid. I have not had any issues with that. Lid edges are fully wrapped in heavy duty nylon type fabric. Inside of the compartment is soft felt type fabric and the underside of the lid is made of finer nylon type stuff. It is well padded to be used inside another bag.

It is about 8 1/2"W x 8 1/2"H x 4"D but can be over stuffed to be larger.
