5.0 out of 5 stars Love this book!!
I used this book for a couple of tests. I was so amazed how closely the material in this book matched what was on the exams. If you are taking the "Ethics in America" exam, all you need is this book! I passed with 10 points to spare. Using ONLY this book. I also passed the HR Management,Personal Finance and Organizational Behavior with high marks. Before I found this...

3.0 out of 5 stars Useful, but not complete
This 400 page guide covers eight lower level DSST examinations: Business Mathematics, Ethics in America, Human Resource Management, Introduction to Business, Organizational Behavior, Personal Finance, Principles of Financial Accounting, and Principles of Supervision. By taking these exams, you could possibly earn 24 credit hours.

While this is a great study guide, it...

Compared to the 10? pages in this condensed study guide. I love this book because everything you need to know is there. In fact, I recognized some of the sample questions in the book on the exam! I wish they had a book like this for all their exams.

While this is a great study guide, it was useless for what I purchased it for - upper level credit examinations. I was misled into thinking it contained more exams than it does.

If you are preparing for those eight exams, it contains a pretest, presents the material and then has a sample examination, and would be a very useful resource in my opinion. Just not useful for me.

4.0 out of 5 stars DANTES Subject Standardized Tests - An Alternative to CLEP, June 2, 2005
This review is from: DSST The Official Test Preparation Guide (Paperback)
The Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES) and its Subject Standardized Tests (DSST) is not as well-known as the College Board's College Level Examination Program (CLEP). Nonetheless, it is used as a basis for granting credit by examination by even more colleges, and many feel that the tests are somewhat easier.

This book is excellent for its intended use, as a test-preparation guide. Not a full course text. Just a guide.

It begins with some tips about studying for and taking multiple-choice exams. These are useful, but nothing the college-bound student shouldn't already be familiar with, so I found this section to be a little weak.

Next there are sections covering 8 of the 37 DSSTs. I suppose this makes sense, as a book covering all the tests would be pretty big. (Not necessarily 5 times as big as this one, which is set in large type with a lot of white space.) Each section consists of a pre-test, supporting material based on the DSST fact sheet outlines, some sample questions, and a practice test.

This is pretty standard for exam-prep books, and I give this one high marks for this portion of its content. I would NOT recommend taking these tests based solely on the information in these summaries. You MIGHT squeak by, but using this book alone would be the absolute bare minimum of preparation.

Finally, copies of the DSST fact sheets, (which are freely available online and elsewhere) are included for just the 8 exams covered in the book. They aren't that much help, although they do include the (outdated) bibliography which was mostly lacking within the text, and some possibly current data about ACE credit recommendations. (You need to contact your own college to get the real grading curve anyway.)

I have no idea if Chauncey-Thompson-Peterson's plans to cover any of the other tests in future editions, but since this book has been available for some time, my guess would be "No." The 8 tests covered are: Business Mathematics, Ethics in America, Human Resource Management, Introduction to Business, Organizational Behavior, Personal Finance, Principles of Financial Accounting, and Principles of Supervision.

This review is from: DSST The Official Test Preparation Guide (Paperback)
I used this book for two exams-Ethics in America and Principles of Supervision. I used this book exclusively and passed the Supervision test with 12 points to spare. I highly recommend this book. Book contains many practice tests so when you take the exam you dont have any suprises. Good Luck

I took and passed six of the introductory exams ... personal finance, intro to business, principles of management, computing, organizational behavior, and HR management using only this guide. I would highly recommend it for the lower level business courses.

This review is from: DSST The Official Test Preparation Guide (Paperback)
With the help of CLEP Principle of Management and DSST, I was able to pass Management, Human Resource Management, and Organizational Behavior. I don't advise doing what I did, but I wanted to see if I could pass these required classes with this one book. One section of Management is Staffing (Human Resource Management),DSST helped clarify this portion of the test. DSST covers other courses which I did not take. DSST gives you the essentials to pass multiple test, save money and time.

Using this book will give you the easiest college credits available. I passed all DANTES except Prin of Financial Accounting. All the other exams passed with over 55. They are ridiculously easy, and easier than CLEPS. The best 20 bucks ever spent in my life

I used this book to study Ethics in America. I think it is an excellent source but I always study more than one source. I think this book would have been sufficient to pass but I would recommend also reviewing instantcert or looking up terms and people in an online encyclopedia such as reference.com. The test is screwy so I can't imagine any book being perfect but this one is sufficient. I got a high 73 on the exam. Definitely use this book for Ethics in America.
