As stated in the title, quality is surprisingly better than you would expect for the price. The connectors for the probe wires create a very snug fit. They will not lose their connection with even a stout tug of the probes. The plastic housing for the unit, the connectors, and the probe handles feel tough and durable.

The display is very large and easy to read. The control setting indicator label has a much smaller font, but is still easy enough for those with moderately poor eyesight to read. Bold print and high contrast help with legibility of both.

The symbols for direct current and alternating current are used to indicate voltage measurement control ranges in lieu of typical DC and AC. This is sure to throw off the average DIY handyman or hobbyist without education in electrical diagramming. Interestingly, the instruction book shows a picture of the exact same model, but with "DC" and "AC". This could be an indicator of outdated stock. But, if it works just as well, sells for less, and I wind-up learning something in the process, it's just another example of my ideal type of bargain.

Also, an unexpected surprise was that batteries WERE included.

I was attempting to install an automatic gate opener for our driveway to replace our old operator. After installing the new one, it still didn't work correctly. It kept using the back-up batteries instead of the AC power source. I had to use the DT830B to test certain parts of the operator circuit board as well as testing the AC cord & power socket. The DT830B showed me what I needed to know to pinpoint the source of my problem. I determined that even though there was 120v coming out of the power socket, the cord wasn't carrying enough voltage to the operator. So thanks to the DT830B, I didn't need to call a repair man or electrician. I just went and bought the proper cord and voila, my automatic gate works. If you're like me and don't know anything about electrical repair, you can still get by using this device. The instructions on the box and in the manual are just okay but don't do enough to explain some of the basics. So I simply went to youtube to see if I can learn a little more just to make sure I used this thing correctly and didn't electrocute myself. I highly recommend you do the same if you're new at this. I watched two quick videos and felt comfortable enough after that to proceed. And btw, you can't beat the price on this thing.

Worked right out of the box and costs less than the combination volt/amp meter I was looking at. Has adjustment inside case to adjust the voltage readings displayed to sync with other meters. Rotary dial for functions is sticky and requires some fiddling to get a reading after the unit has been off. Works for my purposes, hard wired to monitor charge status of solar collectors and battery array.

This Multimeter is small, compact and cheap. It contains all necessary functions to use at home. Even if you use it only one time for repair something at home it is cheaper than call to appropriate service. I’m enjoying this Multimeter.

I've got three of these cheap multimeters in three different residences and they all work and work poorly,.....and it doesn't matter one bit to me and I'll tell you why.

I just had a ceiling fan quit working and I didn't find a tripped breaker. So I removed the switch cover and used this cheap little meter to determine that the wall switch needed replacing. 20 minutes after my fan quit, it was working again (I had the switch on hand).

This cheap meter was all that I needed to diagnose the problem and it saved me time and money.

Now I have an entire electronics workbench and could have used a more expensive meter to more accurately tell me that the wall switch needed replacing,.....I'm kidding,.....But this was all that was needed.

Yes,...I have cheap meters,...Yes,...I have spent eight years in school learning electronics,...Yes,...I have expensive meters and I even built my own oscilloscope, 35 years ago.

Most of what someone would need a meter for around the house,...This one will do! and do it poorly,...which is all that is required much of the time. To improve both the functionality and accuracy when using these meters, use A Pair Alligator Leads whenever possible and if you want a real multimeter go Buy A Fluke. Something else that people need to know is that although there is no substitute for formal training, many things that you'll need to know about can be found through a web search. For example, everyone knows that cars are 12 volt and if you connect this to your car battery it should read about 12.5 volts. But with your car running it will read about 14 volts, your car is not really 12 volts. If it were ever to read an actual 12 volts, it means that your battery is low or needs replacing. Electrical specifications are often approximated and your home may provide 108 or 122 volts and that can change during the day too.

I would bet that many of the people who say that these don't work, simply don't know what they're doing, but like any cheap product these days, I'm sure that there are also lemons. So go pick one up locally instead of online if it makes you more comfortable. Discount tool stores like Harbor Freight have them for about the same price, that's where one of mine came from.

Mine works as it should and takes decent readings. It is not extremely accurate but good for rough data collection.

The multimeter comes in very handy. I liked the modern design, convenient small size, ease of use, and low cost. I carry it and use it everywhere (even at work since it fits easily in my backpack)

A home project I'm working on needed two 12V voltmeters and a 10A ammeter. Normally, one would consider a digital panel meter (DPM) for each function. However, the DT830B was notably cheaper, so I used three of them, breaking one wire of the battery connector in each so I could turn them all on and off with one switch. (Unlike some meters, this one does not include an auto-power-off function, so leaving it on will eventually drain the battery.

The compact meter is easy to tie down with a cable tie, and I ended up with three dedicated meters for less than $17. You simply cannot buy digital panel meters at a comparable price. The display is fairly large, and the LCD contrast is good. Packed with a set of test-probe leads (which I cut off to use just the meter plugs and hardwired the inputs) and a battery, there is no better value in meters.

As a general-purpose meter, it performs fine. As noted in another review, there is no beeper continuity test, though it does have a seldom-used transistor test socket. While the picture shown is dark gray, all three meters I bought were yellow.

At the price, it's easy to have one in every tool kit and in every vehicle. The convenience alone makes them worth the price. It's by no means a laboratory-grade test instrument. Most of the time, though, all one needs is to see if something is within an order of magnitude of the expected value to determine if something is working or not. The accuracy of the DT830B, a few percent, is plenty good enough.

Recommended.

This meter is not as small as it appears online and requires about 8 of those odd LR type flat batteries-- the add does not mention battery size or amount (I was hoping on AA or AAA batteries). Additionally, it's built in light never worked and its seller refuse to respond to me or my concerns.
