5.0 out of 5 stars Different experience
My mother has had this thermometer for at least five years. We pull it out probably 10 times a year. Other than the battery running out of juice, it has always worked perfectly. We never used the magnet, as nothing nearby is magnetic. We have also never spilled anything on it; we detach the probe when moving the dish so there aren't any accidents. Takes a few minutes...

Good idea bad product. Worked great 2 weeks. Magnets fell off end of week 2. Probe quit week 3. Costs more to return for repair than it is worth.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not a quality product, December 25, 2003

This thermometer is very cheaply made. It feels flimsy and the magnets on the back won't hold it secure on a metal surface.

...but died after a few months. Be careful about getting the probe wet, it will cause the rest to malfunction.

2.0 out of 5 stars Unbelievably difficult to set, December 5, 2007

I'm a very tech oriented guy. I usually can easily set the digital readouts on any machine. When I see a blinking 12:00 at a friend's house, I offer to set it for them and have never been unsuccessful in setting any readout without the instructions. This thing is very hard to remember how to set the time and temperatures that you want the alert to sound at. How to set it is simply not clear at all. I even found the instructions on line and I STILL don't understand.

I found the instructions on line http://www.cdn-timeandtemp.com/pdf/products/DTTCen.pdf but it hasn't helped me understand how to get what I want.

I wish it just said "temp to beep at" and let me set that. This upper/lower business doesn't make sense to me. Maybe it will eventually sink in.

It does still read the temperatures very well. So I use it to calibrate my oven every time I bake. I can watch it to make sure it's done preheating before I put my baked goods in.

I haven't had the problem with the magnets falling off. My fridge is next to the oven so I often put it on fridge instead of the oven, especially if using the stove at the same time. I think the magnets are likely to fall off if it gets too warm. It would probably melt the insides and cause it to malfunction if you let it get too warm also. If your stove top stays cool while baking, you can lay it flat on the stove top, so gravity isn't pulling on the magnets if it gets warm. The digital read out part folds up so you can see it from the front, when it's laying flat.

I really hate that it only reads up to 392 F. I have many times where I want to heat the oven to 425 or 450 and it simply doesn't read that high. I also use it when cooling down sorbet or ice cream custard before I freeze it. Just drop the probe in it and close the fridge on the cable. Keep the read out on the front of the fridge and you will be able to see when it's cool enough transfer to your ice cream freezer. It takes much longer than you'd expect to cool down a liquid.

It should also go below 14 f to check freezer temps.

It works ok, but there are probably better ones with an easier user interface.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works great- just take care of it, April 11, 2009

This is a great digital thermometer. I use it for making candy and for cooking meat. I've had it for 3 years and am still quite happy with it. It needs to be well taken care of- the probe cannot go in the dishwasher and cannot be left in the oven to burn out. If possible, I might give this product a 4.5 because the buttons are a bit tough to press; sometimes I have to press them multiple times to get them to register. Overall it's a great product and I highly recommend it.

I never actually got to use mine because as I was trying it out I noticed that the one I received appeared to be defective. When I would press the buttons (which seemed very flimsy to begin with) I would often have to press them multiple times to get a response. Aside from that the design of the unit has to be the most complicated timer ever created. Yes it has a lot of functions which is nice, but most people will never figure out the majority of the basic functions without thoroughly reading through the manual. I am returning this unit, and will likely purchase a different model in it's place.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not built to last, not even built to use, July 21, 2011

We only need a very simple device to take simple read of temperature. This one seems like a good option, price is just right and has all the function we need. The first day I got it, did a simple test, boiling water read out at 100C/212F(~), which seems just right. And the next a few days, most of the time it functioned as supposed to, however, I can tell the error increased. Yesterday, about 1 week from the 1st use, we calibrated again using boiling water, the readout was 110 C/2xx F. Something was wrong, but still it was close. And today, it just became ridiculous, the room temperature water measured at 81 C/ 180 F. It just not getting better.

1.0 out of 5 stars great for the most part, May 18, 2011

I will keep this simple, I did not like 3 things about this. One, the temp is every other digit so if you are looking for a very specific temperature you may have to adjust by 1 degree (no huge deal). Two you can't shut it off, and though it makes a nice kitchen clock since I have never set the time on my microwave :), it would be nice to save the battery life to have that option. Three, the alarm seems to go off not when the temp is reached but rather when the temp goes just over the temp you programmed, which could be a problem say if you are making custard, but once again if you adjust for that you should be fine. Other than that it is accurate, quick, good magnet, easy to use,and i like how you can adjust the angle of the display. Alright I am changing my rating to 1 star. Why? Well the probe has failed twice, I sent the unit back and they replaced it, however the new unit failed after just a few uses. Furthermore, the magnet is not that great, if it gets any grime on it it loses its ability to hold to a metal surface for the most part. I could send it back again since it has a five year warranty but nah, I am buying s new one.

4.0 out of 5 stars No problems with it at all., May 15, 2011

I've used it exclusively for deep fat frying. The clip holds the probe securely, you can easily adjust it to whatever depth in the oil is appropriate, and it doesn't get in the way in the pan. I didn't have any problems at all programming it, perhaps some people find it confusing that you can set both an UPPER and LOWER temperature threshold. I haven't had it long enough to judge longevity, so I don't feel I can give it 5-stars, otherwise it works fine.
