This is a standard issue Conibear style trap. This means a few things - most importantly that it is a kill trap. This is not a live trap. You must understand this before buying it and wondering why you have dead animals stuck in it.

You do not need the tool suggested by amazon. You do need two working braincells to know where to put your feet. You need to be strong enough to put 100lbs of force on the springs. If you're not strong, buy the set tool. If you weigh more than 100lbs and you're of average build, you don't need the tool but it helps. It really helps when you're trying not to get mixed up too much with the body in the trap, and it really helps when you have three or more out there and your arms get tired.

Pros - conibear traps fit just about anywhere which is important if you want to catch something specific and have limited space. They blend in and don't alert animals, or they can be baited to attract animals. The trigger does not care if you bend the whiskers. Unlike other traps, it does not need to have the trigger maintain it's shape. Unlike other traps it does not require lubricant (usually bees wax). This particular trap has two springs, which means each spring requires half the force to set it and the trap closes evenly.

Cons - This particular trap is not stainless steel. It will rust. This particular trap only has three "teeth", which only gives you three settings of sensitivity for the trigger. In reality this is a minor gripe because the trigger is just as long as other triggers. The whiskers on the trigger are not user serviceable, so the trap has a limited life. Too many bends on the whiskers or the trap shutting on them (a common problem with the conibears) will break them off.

5.0 out of 5 stars Did the job, September 3, 2010

The trap worked exactly as it should. Beat my expectations. Setup was really easy. Was the perfect solution for a groundhog that would not respect the fence around my vegetables and made a mockery of the have a heart. Worked best when placed directly in front of the hole. I wouldn't use it where a pet could get to it, though -- this thing means business. It was plenty big to handle a very large groundhog.

Shipping was fast -- fast enough to save the tomatoes. It comes covered in oil, and will rust fairly quickly if left out unprotected. A dirty device for a dirty job -- no complaints.

You'll need to give some thought to how to dispose of the results. It didn't make a mess, but still, you've got to do *something* with what you catch.

5.0 out of 5 stars sturdy product, April 26, 2010

I will admit that this was an impulse purchase for me, I've never trapped an animal in my life...that being said, I have used this on sticks and even a shoe and it works nicely on those. It seems to be sturdy and well made, but one word of caution, it takes a fair amount of strength to set it by hand. Anyone who isn't very strong may want to consider buying a setting tool as well.

I set this trap in a well trafficked location in my yard, and I have to check it daily to make sure that there is not a body in it. One must be careful in setting it, and there are several videos on line that demonstrate the proper way to do that, as well as the proper location to place such a trap. A body hold trap does not necessarily kill the animal out right, and the use of the trap is not for the squeamish, as one might have to club the trapped animal. Given the amount of damage in my garden, I do not find this requirement to be anything other than gratifying. It would get 5 stars if it did not rust so readily.

I have trapped for 20+ years and have obviously used alot of traps. This is by far the best 110 conibear trap on the market. I use it to trap rabbits, squirrels, mink, muskrat, and even a groundhog. Love it

5.0 out of 5 stars trapping skunk, January 29, 2011

I have trapped for a number of years , but this is the best small game trap you can buy.Anything from squirrels to muskrats this trap kills them quickly and humanely.Do not set this trap for bigger animals because it will not kill them on impact.

5.0 out of 5 stars Got a groundhog, April 12, 2009
This review is from: #110 Body Trap
I,ve been using the 110 dukes for squirrels and such and decided to put it in a groundhog hole. Well, the next day I checked it and there was a good size one laying there. Dead on impact. The recommend a 160 coni or over for groundhogs, but a 110 duke does the job too.

Would have been nice if the product included some instructions for setting the trap. No information whatsoever accompanied the product. Product was packed in a box without wrapping and was covered in grease.

1.0 out of 5 stars Rusted within a day or two, August 14, 2011

My favorite groundhog nuisance has several holes in our acre yard. I put this trap at one of his holes, but he avoided it like the plague. Within a few days, it was rusted to the point that the trap would not even set off when I poked the trigger with a stick. So now it's off to recycling. If, as some commenters suggest, covering it with some primer is a good way to make it last longer, I suggest the manufacturers do so.

And unlike some other commenter said, you DO want the setting tool. I'm a decent sized ex-offensive lineman and NCAA athlete, and my intelligence is not lacking. I had a very hard time setting this trap, and eventually went back to buy the setting tool. Now that's off to recycling too...

I did catch a groundhog with a live trap a few weeks after I gave up on this one. Took about 5 days with the live trap, after 3 weeks without results with this one.
