Christmas Day Coaster Burner - Won't read or write CDs,
By Wireless Tech (Virginia, United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: HP 16X DVD±RW Dual-Layer LightScribe External Hard Drive ( DVD640RE ) (Personal Computers)
Well, this has been a fun addition to Christmas Day - making CD coasters and spending time on a worthless call to outsourced tech support. HP must be getting so many calls on these units that they've established a call center number specifically for this DVD burner unit. The only good thing about the call to this tech support outfit was the answering the call was a native english speaker. And I guess he was upfront saying you had to be careful choosing the firmware updates because HP uses a number of manufacturers for this drive -- and the wrong manufacturer firmware will really cause problems if you load it. After reading through a bunch of stuff, he said (1) I needed to go to the HP site and choose a firmware upgrade and (2) I need to use specific cd manufacturers as the drive doesn't work with several. There is no 2nd tier support for the next three days due to Holidays. When I asked to speak with supervisor, he put me on hold for a long time and later returned saying the supervisor wasn't available. He also was not able to give me a ticket number for this call.

HP support should be called non-support. I have bought a lot of HP products in the past but have always been lucky enough to have them all hold up through the warranty period until now. Bought a Pavilion Media Center PC with lightscribe and less than 5 months later the lightscribe dvd died. Do the get me a replacement or just a run around? You got it....the run around. I will never and I advise everyone else not to buy from HP until they can prove to stand by their warranties.
