Editorial Reviews

Review

"Good background on the history of DVDs."

From the Publisher

After several years of intense development and cross-industry cooperation among consumer electronics companies, computer manufacturers, and the entertainment industry, the DVD format has arrived - and with it a new era of consumer entertainment. For the first time, high-quality digital video as well as surround sound audio can be delivered to the consumer on a single interactive compact disc. Playable on the set-top or the desktop, DVD bridges the worlds of consumer video and personal computing in a single, unified format.

While DVD promises to be a highly-successful consumer electronics format, preparing content ('premastering') for DVD can be a very complex process. And like most new formats, DVD requires new tools and techniques to create rich and satisfying content that make the most of the medium. Written by personnel from Sonic Solutions, the leading player in this field, the book is an authoritative guide to everything you need to get into developing, producing and using DVD equipment.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dissapointing effort, June 14, 2001

This book is pure and simply a marketing technique employed by Sonic. It only scratches the surface of DVD Production. Upon reading it you are still left with many questions that this book should have answered. Mark Ely has written the excellent white paper on the subject available at the Sonic web site for free, skip the purchase of this book and download the white paper.

2.0 out of 5 stars Basically an Ad for Sonic, January 29, 2001

First, this book is a bit pricey for ..............

Second, the book is supposed to be about DVD production. Instead it is a really basic overview. The Sonic DVDit! product they have screenshots plastered all over the book and include a demo version on their disc isn't a tool that has ever been used for any commercial title (it is a consumer tool). There are only a few screenshots of Sonic Creator, and no mention of Daikin or Spruce authoring systems which do the lion share of professional titles.

The 30 pages on DVD Audio was informative and kept the book from being a total waste.

A scant 2 pages on how to get your disc replicated was why I bought this book. Needless to say I was disappointed.

Following upon the overwhelming success of the 24 karat Gold Ultradisc(tm) CD-R, Mobile Fidelity is expanding its presence in the recordable media market with the introduction of the forthcoming 24 karat Gold Ultradisc(tm) DVD-R . Designed for professional, data critical, music, video and graphic archival applications, and all other data storage needs where there is zero margin for loss or error, ULTRADISC(tm) DVD-Rs feature instantaneous pit burning (burst burning) for superior pit formation and extremely low to no error rate and the exclusive DATA GUARD SCRATCH RESISTANT COATING(tm) - which increases surface protection by up to seven times more than regular non coated DVD recordable media. Further, where as the average DVD-R has a projected life-span of 20 years when stored under optimal conditions, accelerated aging tests demonstrate that the ULTRADISC(tm) DVD-R will retain their technical, data storage and retrieval specifications for over 100 years.
