Book Description

August 11, 2002

If you're an independent filmmaker, video professional, corporate trainer, or event videographer looking to create professional DVD-Video with Apple's DVD Studio Pro, you'll appreciate the practical format of DVD Studio Pro 1.5 for Macintosh: Visual QuickPro Guide. Each task is broken down into concise step-by-step instructions, illustrated with plenty of informative screenshots. All of the exciting features in DVD Studio Pro merit in-depth treatment: menu creation, chapter markers, scripting, MPEG encoding, asset organization, linking, and output formatting are all clearly explained. Plus, the book reveals previously undocumented DVD Studio Pro secrets, such as how to write advanced scripts using SPRMs and how to burn DVD-RW discs directly from within the software. DVD Studio Pro 1.5 for Macintosh: Visual QuickPro Guide picks up where the manual leaves off with complete coverage of AC-3 encoding, including tutorials on determining the dialog normalization value and compression profile for AC-3 audio streams. This handy Visual QuickPro Guide is a reference tool and a start-to-finish tutorial that will grow with you as you master one of the most powerful tools available for creating DVDs on the Mac.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

If you are new to both DVD authoring in general and DVD Studio Pro in particular, the 17 chapters in this book are the road map you need. Every page is loaded with information, tips, screen shots, and tutorials designed to walk you through the process of creating a DVD step by step. Starting with basic discussions of different digital formats and the audio and video encoding processes; to the rundown of the DVD Studio Pro interface and the best methods for setting up a project; to building menus, scripts, and importing graphics; Peachpit Press's DVD Studio Pro Visual QuickPro Guide thoroughly covers the process of DVD authoring.

Most important, this book doesn't end with the basics. The final section, consisting of four chapters, details how to create a 16:9 formatted disc, multiple language tracks, adding subtitles, scripting, and creating hybrid DVDs. The clear and concise text and graphics make this book a pleasure to work through, and the supple paper and binding help it stay flat on your desk while working with it. Although no CD-ROM (or DVD) is included, there is an accompanying Web site for downloading examples cited in the book, and even a bonus project not listed in the book.

Peachpit's DVD Studio Pro Visual QuickPro Guide is the perfect companion to Apple's professional-grade DVD authoring package. Authoring a professional and polished DVD can be an elusive goal, especially for the beginning DVD creator. Learning to use a tool like Apple's DVD Studio Pro with this QuickPro Guide, however, is possibly the fastest and easiest way to climb the hardest part of the learning curve. --Mike Caputo

5.0 out of 5 stars Apple's manual's a good start, but finish with this book!, October 23, 2002
This review is from: DVD Studio Pro 1.5 for Macintosh: Visual QuickPro Guide (Paperback)
I have been using Macs for over 15 years and have always wanted to be an amateur filmmaker. I started to build my studio a few years back and now I have all the pieces in place: PowerBook G4, Final Cut Pro 3, Panasonic AG-DV1000 deck, DVD Studio 1.5.1, and a FireWire DVD-R. I can now create and edit my video and then use DVD Studio to make professional DVDs for my friends and family. I was able to make a DVD after going through Apple's DVDSP manual and tutorial, but the DVD lacked professional functionality. This book bridges the gap from a functional DVD to a professional DVD.

I recommend this book to any FCP user who wants to make the jump to DVD.

Thanks..

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book !, September 23, 2002
This review is from: DVD Studio Pro 1.5 for Macintosh: Visual QuickPro Guide (Paperback)
I am not a professional, just a keen home movie producer and DVD enthusiast and I moved on from iDVD to DVD Studio Pro and bought this book at the same time. It is an excellent book, up to date and helped me master DVDSP in a couple of days. I use iMovie to edit my family movies (it is so easy and yet has tremendous features), and I have just started to input my finished iMovie from DV tape to Final Cut Pro 3.0.2 to insert Chapter Markers for use in DVDSP, which is the one feature I could not achieve with iDVD. I recommend the book to anybody moving to DVD Studio Pro.

5.0 out of 5 stars QuickPro Guide? Quick: indeed. Pro: most definitely!!, August 20, 2002

.

I've been using DVD Studio Pro since Apple released it in early 2001 and I've seen few books from an authoring and designing perspective. Even more interesting was that I learnt things that I didn't know DSP could do... What about rewriting a DVD-RW right on your SuperDrive?

This QuickPro guide is a snap to read as it's written in a very light style, but more than "Quick" it gets really "Pro". The author has a sense of design and style and seems to be experienced in multimedia production as I can relate to most of his comments and tips.

DVD Studio Pro is not as difficult to use as other Windows applications but the included manual has some abysmal gaps, specially in the advanced topics like scripting. Good news is that this book gets some out of this world tips and tricks that I've never seen before. Although it does not come with a CD or DVD the publisher's site has some killer examples that I've used in a few of my own projects. A nice time saver.
