Printing a simple label takes just a few seconds, while fiddling with symbols and type styles will take you a bit longer. The instruction sheet lays it out clearly, and you'll be adding shaded boxes, condensed print, and happy faces to your labels with no trouble. Possibilities for decoration include seven different borders, four text sizes, international characters, and simple graphics such as stars and musical notes.
The built-in label cutter slices through plastic labels with no problem, and the blade is well protected from little fingers, making it safe for children to use. Labels are extremely durable, much more so than the thick plastic of yesteryear, and the metallic tape is actually weather proof. One downside is that there's no adapter; the Letratag only operates on batteries. However, the labeler automatically shuts off after two minutes of non-use--a battery-saving plus.
For office or retail use, it's a little disappointing that the label tape comes in only one width--0.5 inches can be a bit too small for some purposes. Also, while the letter size is great for labeling file folders, envelopes, or desktop containers, you'll need to use the "big caps" mode to be able to read labels on larger storage boxes or shelving units. This is a great machine for labeling outdoor equipment and an ideal gift for summer campers or college freshmen. --Jill Lightner

Before you order this!,

Make sure you include at least one label tape casette with your order! I wrongly assumed that it would come with one and now have to pay for shipping again to get the tape. Also, be sure you have 6 batteries.

Not your old DYMO,

WOW We are impressed. I bought this before Christmas to help my daughter (9 years old) improve her organizational skills and now the entire family uses it. My husband and I each take it to work and the kids use it for numerous school-related things. My husband's employer and mine have each made purchases of this item since seeing how wonderful it is and easy to use. We may have to buy three more so we can all have our own. Tremendous improvement over the old DYMOs!

I have had the electronic Dymo Letratag Label Maker for several months but I find myself still reaching for my old manual type Dymo label makers.While the Letratag does have a lot of features and offers a much broader character and symbol set, in a variety of different fonts and styles, I find this to be overkill when I just want to make a quick label. Furthermore, the cost of the Letratag labels is exorbitant compared to the old type Dymo plastic labels. I can buy 3-4 rolls of the old type Dymo plastic labels, with a lot more footage, for the same price as one roll of Letratag. I also find that printing only in black is a limitation. There are times when the white lettering (as found in the old type labels) is more suitable in certain lighting conditions. Currently, the Letratag label is limited to a ½" width, whereas, the older type Dymo plastic labels come in 3/8" and ¼" widths. The ¼ inch is especially handy when labeling small part draws or the side of a plastic CD case. I have noticed that the "Metallic" silver Letratag tape develops a slight but permanent curl on the cut edges after is applied (a small annoyance - considering the old type plastic labels tend to curl and pull away where the temperature fluctuates greatly - like my garage). Finally, the cost of the batteries is of concern and there is no jack to provide AC power to the Letratag. Where the Letratag excels is when you need a lot of the same labels - you can spit them out one after another. Summary: The Letratag cannot replace my other older (manual) Dymo label makers; rather it used along side them for those infrequent occasions when my manual label makers can't provide a desired symbol or style, or when I need to make multiple copies of the same label. 2115|R64TQFDWX0EBL;2115|R1FV5KXF98PVHC;2115|R3FGH1DPYZYSV1;
