Since I have no aptitude for technology, I thought this would be a challenge to use, but was very pleasantly surprised. I figured it out without any help...high praise from a woman who has to call in a friend when the alarm clock needs to be re-set. The DYMO LabelManager is, as they say, easy enough for a child to operate, and I must admit that Carson was, indeed, the one who figured out how to work the label insertion thingy. Then the little bugger bit me, but to be fair, I did take his cookie when his back was turned.
The machine is so much fun to use, it's addictive. I'm wandering around looking for new things to label, which has the cats looking rather nervous. Easy-to-understand icons provide a foolproof guide for formatting, all the options are clearly shown, so you don't have to deal with that technological Mobius strip of locating and figuring out how to implement features that you don't know exist. You can print out from one to ten labels at once (all the same label) and the memory holds up to 9 addresses.
The lithium battery and recharging cable are enclosed, all you have to do is get labeling...and resist the impulse to carefully identify that left-over pork chop in the refrigerator as "left-over pork chop."
I contacted Dymo support and was told that the output of the label maker is the way it is and can't be changed.
Here's my complaint:
The printer accepts 3/4 inch labels and is designed to allow 2 rows of type on the label. I wanted to create a single label with 2 rows of basic type - just as the device claims it can.
The output of a single line of type is fine, the problem arises when you hit the carriage return and add the second line of type. Once you do that the type stretches horizontally. For example if I type a word in a single line that is 2 inches in length, this same word will be 3-3/4 inches in length once I hit the carriage return.
Using Adobe Indesign I determined that the horizontal scaling of the type on the label is almost 300%!
This is a problem for 2 reasons. First, the labels look crappy because the type is stretched. Second, a label that should only be 2 inches (normal font output) will not fit in the space I need it to due to the horizontal scaling.
So if you want a label with 2 rows of type that is readable, forget it. Find another device.
This is pretty basic font stuff. I'm actually shocked that Dymo is putting out this product that is so clearly defective in it's fundamental design. I had no idea this would even be an issue. I'm very disappointed because otherwise it seems like a fine product.
This will not, however, be a labeler that you will want to consider if you ever want to print mailing labels or anything more than two lines. There are products for that, but this is not one of them. I have read about issues with two-line printing, although I haven't tried printing anything that wasn't single-line printing. You might or might not have issues there.
All in all, this is a fine little printer if you know what to expect coming in.
The LM360D is almost, but not quite, perfect for handheld "thumbs" typing (the qwerty keyboard is too small for standard typing), and the keys are easy to press. Used this way, the important navigation buttons in the center are too much of a stretch for my small hands, but the handling and feel might be perfect for someone with larger hands. The buttons have a smooth, rubbery, tactile feel that is satisfying, although the buttons tend to hold onto dust more than hard plastic would.
As best I can determine, both the ink and the label material are contained in the label cartridge itself, meaning (as with any printer) the product's quality depends on the quality of the cartridge. The 3/4" x 10' sample cartridge that came with my product at first would not feed at all; I finally figured out this was due to a small section of the end of the label being slightly curled (apparently from age), which I corrected by manually pulling off some of the material and cutting it off cleanly.Read more ›
