4.0 out of 5 stars What fun!
If you're as obsessive about organization as I am, you'll love this little gadget. I use it to label everything from file folders to jars of spices or homemade jelly. The labels stay stuck and remain readable (although a trip through the dishwasher will fade the ink and may dissolve the glue). It's borrowed more often than my circular saw.

I was happy with this product when I first purchased it but now I want my money back. I used the labels to put my name and contact info on photo equipment (compact flash cards, lenses, cameras) but the text faded making the labels pointless.

I do find that when you use the fancy font styles (such as italic or shadow) the text is less readable. The 2-line function works well, and the optional pictures are cute (but what prints doesn't match what displays in the slightest and they are distorted along with the text if you apply a font style). Text tends to print on the lower portion of the label ribbon rather than being centered horizontally.

If you've just punched in a long label, DO NOT suddenly decide to switch to or from the Big Caps size -- it will delete your entry.

If it starts behaving strangely, the batteries are low (which happens seldom. I've had the labeler for 5 years and changed the batteries once).

I like the paper labels to label paper and cardboard items and the plastic labels to label hard-surfaced items. They stay on well. Yet they are easy to peel off, especially the plastic ones.

The tape is self-threading. To change tapes, just open the hinged cover, pull out one cartridge, and pop in another. I keep a spare cartridge of each type handy.

The device leaves an automatic margin on each end of the text. If it is more margin than you want, it is easy to shorten the ends with scissors.

It is very easy to peel the backing off the tape because it is precut lengthwise. Peel off one half from the center and then peel off the other half.

The labels, even the metallic ones, cannot survive a hot flame. (Don't even ask.)

The manual is short, and definitely worth reading.

The product is much more than I bargained for. I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inexpensive and great for most home/small office uses, February 26, 2007
This review is from: DYMO LetraTag Personal Label Maker 11944 Silver (Office Product)
I have used this label maker for all kinds of projects around the house and our homeschool classroom, and I really love it, for the following reasons:

1. The label maker itself is inexpensive.
2. It is simple & intuitive to use.
3. The replacement cartridges are much less expensive than other brands' refills, and very easy to replace.
4. The labels are pre-split for easy peeling (which is no small thing when you consider how long it can take to peel a label made with many competing products).
5. The labels can be immediately repositioned if necessary, without losing their 'stick'.
6. There is not a lot of wasted label stock from excessive margins, like with other labelers.

There are label makers out there with lots of fancy features and font styles, etc., but this suits my needs more-than-adequately, and at an excellent price. I love it for general indoor-only household/office use, such as labeling file folders, drawers and shelves, containers, spices, books, boxes, etc.

A note: These labels will not stand up to direct sunlight/high-heat applications because they are printed on thermally-sensitive paper. In my opinion they aren't a good choice for outdoors, very sunny areas indoors, or the garage in a hot climate, unless your label is intended to be very temporary.

Interestingly, I have seen fabric iron-on labels available for this label maker, allowing you to label clothing, etc. I haven't tried this feature myself, but I thought it was interesting to mention. My kids hate scratchy flap-type labels in their clothes, especially at the neck, but without them I lose track of valuable size/care information. This would also be great for labeling coats/hats/gloves, etc., which get left behind at parties, parks, etc.

This is not product-specific information, but a thought on labeling in general: I never appreciated how much labeling could improve the flow and function of our lives until I got started. One example: I decided to label the pantry shelves to encourage the kids to put things back in a place that makes sense, knowing this would save everyone time when looking for something. I didn't realize it would completely change grocery shopping, too. Now I can go into the pantry, look at the empty spots on the shelves, and 'voila!', my shopping list is nearly done and more comprehensively than before. Less time to create the list and fewer forgotten items. Besides, it stays much neater-looking in there! I am not an obsessively organized person, but I do appreciate a little order in my life. Labeling is an easy way to achieve a little of that, and it's actually kind of fun. $20-ish bucks for a little more time and a little less chaos isn't bad.

(And on a few items the labels started coming off) It's probably fine for other uses but the labels don't last on things that are in the elements and being handled on a regular basis. I've used a more expensive labelmaker in the past and haven't had a problem with the labels fading or coming off (and they looked nicer too). This is a classic "you get what you pay for" situation.

My initial experience with the Letra Tag 11944 was at work. I work for a large school district and have used this label maker for everything from labeling HVAC components to Internet Data Terminals and have yet to find something that cannot be organized by this great, lightweight unit. It has many available symbols, icons and text variations available from the intuitively designed key pad.

Having used this item at work for a few months I decided to get one for my home use. I have used it to label my CD Cases and help organize my storage, you name it!

The labels themselves come on a 1/2" X 13' roll, which last a long time but you'll want to have plenty of refills on hand as they come in many different colors. A great feature is the ability to change a roll at any point. You don't have to wait for the roll you are using to run out before you change colors. Just open the flap, remove the label casette, pop in the new one, close the top and you're good to go.

I guarantee you will find many, many uses for this product.

I bought this product and I am very pleased with it. I was using it within minutes. I'm was also pleasantly surprised to find out that you can buy cartridges that are weatherproof for outdoors as well as printed holiday papers. The crocodile box is particularly cute for labeling kid's things.

This is a great label maker for its $19 price tag. I've seen this exact model selling for as much as $49, so this really is an excellent deal. Certainly not worth $49, but definitely worth $19.

It's nothing fancy. No multitudes of fonts and sizes, but it's very functional. I found it easy to use, especially when changing the tape out. You simply open it up, pop a new cartridge in and you're ready to go. The labels are clear, easy to read, and don't smudge; and they seem to stay where you stick them.

I use it for everything from creating employee file tags to labeling CD and DVD binders. It's small enough to fit in my tote so I can take it with me where ever I need it. It runs on batteries, and they seem to last a good while, so there's no hassle with electric cords. If you like being organized, and are looking for simplicity and ease of use, I think you'll really like this little gadget.

5.0 out of 5 stars A definite must have around the home or office, April 10, 2005

This review is from: DYMO LetraTag Personal Label Maker 11944 Silver (Office Product)
I purchased a Dymo labelmaker because I thought it would come in handy and certainly has, especially since my handwritting is pretty much unreadable. I'm using it to label file folder in my home office, rolling tool carts in the garage, and storage boxes.

It much easier to use the labelmaker than to type labels up on a typewriter because you can carry it with you and it doesn't require an AC adapter. However, I think I'd perfer a QWERTY keypad rather than the ABCDE keypad.

The labels don't always pretty clearly, especially on the metallic tape. Also, the labels don't adhere to certains plastics. But metal and paper are no problem.

The Dymo LetraTag is everything a labelmaker should be. It's easy to use, versatile, and prints labels that are easy to read and stay stuck. Since I got it a few months ago, I've been labeling everything that isn't nailed down. :-) I've used it to make labels for file folders, decorative storage boxes, and shelves.

Years ago I had another label maker that was bigger, more complicated, cost more, and created labels that didn't always stay stuck (like that Seinfeld episode). This one is a dream come true by comparison, and I recommend it highly. It can't be beat, especially for the price!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Decent Basic Labeler, April 14, 2006
This review is from: DYMO LetraTag Personal Label Maker 11944 Silver (Office Product)
After getting this I realized a serious lack in Dymo labelers: limited color selection. I'm much less interested in black on red, blue, yellow, green, etc. I need to label black surfaces and want white on clear or on black which Dymo does not make. Brother and Casio do, although both in limited tape sizes. The only other drawback with this labeler is limited type sizes.
