4.0 out of 5 stars Sounds a bit odd... July 24, 2000
Format:Audio CD
... from the Candlemass I remember and love. What should have struck me as obvious, when I later found out, is that this album was originally meant to be "Abstract Algebra 2", a second album of Leif Edling's highly experimental album, Abstrakt Algebra. This is not as good as AA nr 1, nor can it really compare to the old Candlemass, but it still contains a lot of the old gloom & doom. Singer Björn Flodqvist does a good job, but, let's be fair, he's not Messiah Marcolin or Tomas Vikström. Of the songs, I Still See the Black and Dustflow stand out, though the rest aren't at all bad. I'd say this album takes a few listenings to fully get a grip on. So, listen to it! It's worth it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great reissue of a not so great Candlemass album June 1, 2012
Format:Audio CD
Originally released in 1998, Dactylis Glomerata was the sixth studio album from Swedish doom metal legends Candlemass...sort of. Candlemass was more or less defunct at the time, and this was supposed to be the second album in bassist Leif Edling's Abstrakt Algebra project. The labels only wanted it if it was under the Candlemass name, so we got a Candlemass album that doesn't feel very much like a Candlemass album.

Dactylis Glomerata may not feel like a true Candlemass album, but it does qualify as a doom metal album. It has that crushing heaviness and thick, doomy rhythms that you expect from Edling; it just pulls the sound in a different direction. There's a spacey, droning, almost prog rock vibe to the album that brings to mind a doom metal King Crimson. The guitar work is less catchy than you'd expect both from Candlemass and from Arch Enemy's Michael Amott, but it is quite compelling in its own way. It's all weird, trippy, interesting stuff, but it's easy to see why Candlemass fans are reluctant to embrace this album.

On its own merits, Dactylis Glomerata probably deserves a 3-star (maybe 3.5) rating. It's a very unusual and interesting release, but in the end it just seems out of place in the Candlemass discography. Still, it's an album that serious Candlemass fans will want to hear, even if it does take some time to really grow on you.

Edition Notes: Dactylis Glomerata was reissued in 2008 by GMR. The reissue features digitally remastered sound, a pair of bonus tracks ("Container" and "Thirst") and a bonus second disc with the previously unreleased Abstrakt Algebra II album (which features Mats Leven on vocals).

2.0 out of 5 stars An U-turn in Candlemass's sound August 8, 2000
Format:Audio CD
If you like the old good sound of Candlemass (4 first albums), then you should have second thoughts about buying this one!
