This review is from: Dad and Son: A Memoir about Reclaiming Fatherhood and Manhood (Paperback)
In Viktor Frankl's "Man's Search for Meaning," the author recounts his experience in a Nazi death camp, and what it's like to be stripped of all exterior definitions of self. The resulting philosophy of logotherapy explores man's reason for living, different for each individual. Frankl asks himself: Why do I not commit suicide? Even on these terms, why do I still choose life? Very few individuals are ever forced to face such horrors to reconcile the meaning of life. Art Klein, the author of "Dad & Son," is one such man. His existence has been the typical American dream when he suddenly finds himself stricken with a rare, debilitating muscular disease that claims first his health, then his mobility, his career, his financial resources, and his marriage. Finally the disease even shatters his former definitions of masculinity--what it's like to be a man. There's nothing left. Or is there? Art's agonizing journey forces him to redefine his very core self, and there he finds fatherhood, rediscovering it in a totally new light. Remarkably, Art recounts his tragedy with humor and endearing emotion as he forges a relationship with his precious son, Isaac. Art rises up and reclaims his manhood through this relationship, and he even reclaims his mobility by engineering "The Big Blue Truck," which he can drive standing up. At the end of the book, by his sheer will, he has reclaimed the totality of the sweetness of his life. Good for you, man! Good for you! I recommend this book to anyone and everyone
