5.0 out of 5 stars Definitely One of My Favorite Movies
"Dad" is definitely one of the most touching movies I have ever seen. I have seen this movie several times, and every time I cry at the end! The son lives far away and is so obsessed with work that he has not been home to see his elderly parents much in recent years. 2.0 out of 5 stars Some decent performaces, but overall a rather mediocre effort
Ted Danson is pretty good as a business exec who becomes very attached to his father, played by Jack Lemmon. Lemmon himself is also not bad as the aging father, but the movie itself is full of contrived scenes that are supposed to be heartwarming, but come across as predictable and sometimes ludicrous. Also, I was rather displeased with Lemmon's makeup, which doesn't seem...

"Dad" is definitely one of the most touching movies I have ever seen. I have seen this movie several times, and every time I cry at the end! The son lives far away and is so obsessed with work that he has not been home to see his elderly parents much in recent years. When his mother is unexpectedly taken ill, he comes home and is shocked to see how his father has gone down under the overprotective eye of his domineering mother. John, the son, starts teaching his father to be independent, at the same time rebuilding a good quality relationship with him. It is so touching later in the movie when his dad becomes ill and John dotes over him and refused to give up. This also inspires John to build a relationship with his own son, with whom he has not had much contact. I can relate to this story, as can anyone who has dealt with the illness and/or death of aging parents. I would recommend this movie to anyone, especially anyone who has dealt or is now having to deal with the aging and/or death of a parent. This movie puts a lot of things into perspective about aged parents and with dealing with the illness and death of a parent.

4.0 out of 5 stars If this one doesn't touch you..., November 29, 2004
This review is from: Dad [VHS] (VHS Tape)
You're pure ice. The film, while admittedly not ringing true in spots via dialogue or circumstance, is nonetheless engaging, touching, and emotionally draining. Some of the points it touches on are so dead-on it's scary. Acting-wise, it's Ted Danson's high point. He'll likely never top this performance, but it's enough to leave the world even if he leaves acting tomorrow. Lemmon and Dukakis are tremendous. YOu've read the plot in other reviews; just see it and get ready for an emotional jolt.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great and inspiring movie about elderly parents that is true!, February 3, 2007

I am presently going thru almost the exact same scenario in real life as this movie. I found it by accident early one morning after my mother had a rough night. For many moments, I felt like I was a character in this movie.

Although many reviewers say that these things do not happen the way they are depicted in the movie, I have almost the exact circumstances happening to me and my family right now.
(a) My mother's first hospital told us that she would need full leg amputations and then not survive. This hospital's parent hospital had a renowned specialist that had a procedure that saved my mother's life. Yes, my nephew and I had to find him and convince him to take my mother as a patient with no help from the first hospital (Thanks again Dr. McKinsey!!!).
(b) During the time my mother was in the hospitals (3 weeks), someone in our family was always with her, 24*7. I literally lived there during this time.
(c) I am a VP on Wall Street and took a leave of absence from work, going on 4 months now, to care for my mother and help her regain her health.

This movie made me feel that we are not alone in facing the challenges that make up the primary plot of Dad and that I am not a crack pot for the decisions that I made to help care for my mother.

This is my favorite movie. It's so "true-to-life" for anyone who has suffered with the pain of a family member with cancer. If you are a care-taker, this is a must see movie.

4.0 out of 5 stars "Dad" takes many doctors to task, October 21, 2005

There are many good things I can say about this film and how it touches my heart, making me laugh and cry. But what I really like about it is how it portrays the too common indifference of medical professionals, the courage of one son in challenging the status quo, and the impact a truly caring physician can make in healing mind, body and/or soul. My only gripe is that it isn't realistic about what it takes to get the right doctor on the case. They aren't offered to us the way it's depicted in this film. We have to find them.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the most wonderful movies ever., March 26, 2008
By
J. HARMON (Houston, Texas) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Dad (DVD)
If many of my other reviews have been read, then it is recognized that I can be quite verbose and sometimes eloquent.

This review requires neither (though is worthy of both)... but the title speaks volumes. DAD truly is one of the most wonderful movies that I have ever viewed.

A remarkable story of aging and the conflicts and love that can result there from.

As a social worker in the medical field, the struggles, responsibilities and the heartbreaks of the effects of aging (on the elderly and the family alike) as portrayed in this movie are strikingly accurate. I could only wish and pray that the support and care given to Jake Tremony (Jack Lemmon) was an accurate depiction of that given to most of our elderly.

CHEERS is my favorite television show of all time. With that being said I thought the second worst actor on the show was Ted Danson. I have long found his acting to be stiff and without soul (even his efforts in BODY HEAT and GULLIVER'S TRAVELS - of which I cherish both)... but in DAD Mr. Danson revealed a sincerity and depth that he rarely ever showed in any of his other efforts. I became a fan of Ted Danson after watching DAD.

... and Jack Lemmon is phenomenal. He truly deserved a Golden Globe, at the very least. Any actor who can overpower a cast of Ethan Hawke, Kevin Spacey, Kathy Baker and the beloved Olympia Dukakis must be an incredible performer. The world is a lesser place without Jack Lemmon.

Please watch this movie... even the coldest of hearts will be warmed.

I watched this movie in health class during a unit on ageing. The movies was very touching, and turned the whole class to tears. But, it was a great movie that was very touching, and I would suggest watching it.
