5.0 out of 5 stars Daddy
Danielle Steel's "Daddy" was the best novel i have ever read. All 386 pages were filled with emotion and romance and it was so exciting. Oliver Watson and his three children, Benjamin, Mel, and Sam, and Oliver's ex-wife, Sarah, cause so much emotion through out the book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too Long a Chase
Mr. Durand concocted an interesting premise with a Javert and Jean Valjean type chase. However, it was the longest most repetitive chase I have ever read. The characters kept me engaged for the most part but at the halfway point I was praying for new action or a swift conclusion. The cat-and-mouse improbability became extremely annoying. He did create an interesting...

When SArah leaves her family in Purchase you want to hate her. However, you realize she is doing what she has always wanted but never been able to do. When charlie comes into thier lives you think that she is the perfect woman for Oliver and the family. When Charlie gets asked " Are you .... are you Charollette Sampson?" and she replies "No the names Watson" you know that Oliver has finally found his happiness in life.

From the title "Daddy" I thought the story would be about a screw up father who does nothing but screw up his family. But i was wrong, it ended up to be the mother that hurt the family. Oliver Watson was the ideal father;eventhough, there were times that things got too out of control he alwys seemed to gain back the control. "Daddy" by Danieele Steel is a perfect ten.I recommend this book to anyone who likes romance and lots of emotion; you honestly can not put this book down.

5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't Put It Down!, December 6, 1999

When this book first came out in the mid to late 80s, I was in high school. At that time I wasn't an avid reader nor did I truly enjoy reading. It was this book that changed that perspective for me. This book was wonderful and exciting to read. The details made visualizing the story easy. Now, as a 29 year old teacher, I still love to go back and reread this book. Granted, I love Harry Potter as much as the next person, but for a truly mature suspense thriller "Daddy" is a sure fire winner. Tom Clancy has nothing on the suspense and emotional investment in the characters that are developed while reading "Daddy." I only wish an excellent screen writer would take it and develop a mini-series. A long major film would lose too much detail and character development in the translation.

This was the FIRST book that "I couldn't put it down! "

The Harry Potter books were the 2nd, 3rd and 4th! :-)

5.0 out of 5 stars a terrific read, March 23, 2001

I've now read Daddy at least 6 or 7 times, and each time, after the first few pages, I'm sucked in for the next few hours. A young boy, with the access codes to hundreds of millions of dollars stashed in his memory, is on the run from the Nazis and in particular, a sadistic, brilliant academic the Nazis have recruited to track the boy down when the military's efforts have failed. Thrown into the mix is the boy's American father, who didn't know he even had a son. Durand nails everything here; the plot goes breathtakingly fast, yet believably, and the characters are terrifically well drawn, particularly Thomas, the young genius.

Jaguar was so-so, and I gave up on Angkor Massacre after the first couple pages, but Durand got it all together for Daddy.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Euro-Western Thriller, February 9, 2003
By
This review is from: Daddy (Hardcover)
This story would count as a very long THRILLER, if done by Graham Greene. It tells of an endless chase on behalf of wartime Nazis of a prepubescent multi-lingual boy who carries in his head data on hundreds of accounts whose contents have the smell of wealth to the masters of the Third Reich. It is about human intelligence and its foibles: in the boy, his German tormentors and his Daddy--a title which his playboy turned hero biological father earns in spades as he seeks to save his reluctant son not just from Nazis but also from his inner demons.+++

It is hard to believe that this is a translation from another language (French) into English. I would go so far as to say that this is the first translated novel I have ever read that does not read like a translation.

So kudos all around. This is sheer diversion. Made for a movie serial. The game's afoot!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Thrillers ever written!, February 25, 2005
This review is from: Daddy (Hardcover)
This is one of my favorite books of all time. I won't even lend my copy out unless I buy another one as back up. Daddy by Loup Durand is so far and above any other Thriller. The characters are so vivid and the plot is so intricate it grabs you by the throat on the first few pages and pulls you threw the entire book before you look up and realize you've read till four in the morning again. This book inspired me to start writing thrillers; I hope I'll be worthy of it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolute Perfection, August 22, 2003
By
This review is from: Daddy (Hardcover)
This is the story of a young genius, his unknown father, their evil enemy (a Nazi officer yet) and their travails as they run across Europe. It is both poignant and dramatic as they both dance the familiar patterns of a father and son discovering as much about themselves as each other. The character of the boy is especially well-told - from his terror to his confusion.

I have read this book several times and have never failed to enjoy the read. It may be hard to find but the search is certainly worth the effort.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good... with a different spin on the normal..., May 13, 2002
By
This review is from: Daddy (Paperback)
I really enjoyed this book, and the movie, too. Danielle Steel put a different spin on this one, showing us the life through the eyes of the man... and showing what a dedicated father can accomplish, when his own world falls apart. When his wife goes back to school, Oliver must take care of the house and children, as well as his own career. Unfortunately, his wife continues to pull away... leaving us a great deal of emotions to read through of the children and the parents. Pulling the family together may be an impossible feat, however, Oliver does his best and finds an outcome he can live with. Danielle Steel is very talented, and in this story she dug deep into a problem that has routinely been made into stories about mothers... but this time the story is told about the father.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best spy/thriller I've read, April 8, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Daddy (Hardcover)
This is a battle of wits between and young jewish boy,who has memorized information about hidden money, and aGerman colonel who wants that information. The writing is taut and there are a couple of scenes that literally took my breath away. Very little violence, no sex, just a very engaging story.

5.0 out of 5 stars A different look of how men deal, December 28, 2002
This review is from: Daddy (Paperback)
This book was the perfect example of what a man would have deal with when his wife leaves him with the kids instead of him leaving her. I was happy with the fact that DS made him work at it instead of having him say some meaningful things about the mother Sarah leaving and the kids accepting it and everything going smoothly we all know there are bound to be some troubles the perfect example is Ben the oldest son getting his girlfriend pregnant. I was REALLLY happy when the father Oliver got his second chance just like Sarah took hers I found myslef hating the mother for putting her children in that situation what kind of mother does that but on the other hand being a woman I understand her actions she wanted to know when was it going to be her turn? To live life without having to worry about kids and a husband or what to make to for dinner? I loved this book and I think everyone should read it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tear Jerker, November 30, 2000
By
Abbys (Moreno Valley, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Daddy (Paperback)
I read this book months ago and I decided to scan through the book once again so I can write a fair reviews here in Amazon. Reading DADDY the second time made me appreciate it even more. This is one of the few books I've read & liked that is not a historical romance novel. D.S wrote a very realistic family drama & lotsa hearty circumstances, which can happend to anyone.

When Sara left Oliver Watson & the three children to pursue her own dreams, I thought she was merely wanting to go to school. I was sympathetic to her in the beginning because she sacrificed her dreams for Oliver & the children. I thought it wouldn't hurt for her to chase back that dream since the children are "somewhat" grown ups. However, when she decide to ask for TIME for herself & begun to make excuses in seeing the children, I didn't liked that idea at all. Worst, when she wanted a divorce & left the children with Oliver, I hated her. I cannot imagine a mother doing such a thing. Sad! No matter what, she have responsibilities & obligations to the children. Oliver Watson thought he had it all. He was successful in his carreer, had a family, a house... until Sara left him & the children. He then realized how challenging being a full time father could be. It was very difficult in the beginning yet in the end, he found out that his effort was very rewarding. He found happiness & pride in knowing his own kids. He learned from them & not only became a trusted father but a friend as well. I really felt sorry for Oliver in the beginning... but then at the end, I though he was better off with someone who truly loves him & his children-unconditionally.

The children in this book was portrayed realistically. Their reactions to the divorce, to their mother & to their father- From guilt to rebellions... fears to hate... then love, trust & acceptance! ...all understandable & very heart quenching! Lots of overwhelming & heart warming scenes in this book. The reason why I didn't rate this book a 5 star was because it was too heavy for me. Too dramatic perhaps. Too sad. Even if it was a happy ending, I still found it too depressing. I prefer a dreamy, romantic-comedy book. Story that sores up my heart & makes me dreamy in the end. I prefer Historical romances. However, if you are the kind of person who prefers sad, tear jerker, true-to-life story, then this is definitely the one for you. I didn't regret reading this one though, so..... Overall, it was a good book.
