More About the Author

My name is Carolyn and my game is forever sorting out dead relatives. A passion for genealogy and writing led me this year to complete my non-fiction book, "Who's Your Daddy? A Guide to Genealogy from Start to Finish."

With many unpublished manuscripts in the works, I recognize the sands of time might run out before all are in print, but hobbies of flower gardening, photography, genealogy, travel, computer networking, writers meetings, friends, family and grandchildren habitually interfere - and not necessarily in that order.

My grandparents and great grandparents came in at the opening land run into the Cherokee Strip in 1893 and I still operate the farm in far northwestern Oklahoma where I grew up and lived most of my life. We return often to visit my grandgirls and enjoy the "most wonderful people on earth" in my hometown.

I held many jobs over the years to support my genealogy habit and raise my children, from waiting tables to editing a government employee magazine, from receptionist to newspaper manager, from tax preparer to proofreading Senate bills at the state Capitol, always supplemented by freelance writing. While many of the years were very difficult, my dream stayed the same. Now I am living the dream and count it all joy.

Twenty years ago I moved to the "big city" for a better job, and unexpectedly met and fell in love with a widowed engineer at a church event. Coming from a brown-eyed family, I was always fascinated by blue eyes. His captivating glacier-blue eyes soon made me forget my vow to never marry again, so at our wedding ceremony all six of our children "gave" us in marriage.

My engineer, also known as "left brain," and our pampered Boston Terrier, Shiloh, live in Oklahoma City. We love life and enjoy traveling and being with fun people. My book, "Who's Your Daddy?" is a natural extension of my 30-year experience in finding my way over and around brick walls to discover our family's place in history. The accomplishment is a life-changing experience, and I hope that something I have written will help others.

5.0 out of 5 stars Swimming the Genealogical Research River Made Easier, March 19, 2011
This review is from: Who's Your Daddy? A Guide to Genealogy from Start to Finish (Paperback)
Who's Your Daddy? Is more than a mere guide for genealogy. It's a visit with an experienced researcher sho is willing to share information in an informal casual manner. Reading Leonard isn't like reading a stodgy academic laden tome. It's visiting with a friend who has "been there done that" and can guide us around the sandbars of the genealogical river of research.

As a bonus Leonard includes historical information about the tools available to us, how those tools have changed, and how they affect us in our genealogical research swim. She also include short family stories which illustrate her message. For me, those were the most interesting since that was how I became involved in genealogy, I wanted to know some of the stories of my ancestors.

Whether you've been swimming for awhile in the genealogical research river, or are just now sticking your toes in, Who's Your Daddy will help you avoid drawning in research information, it will buoy you up and help make the swim easier.

A new book, "Who's Your Daddy? A Guide to Genealogy From Start to Finish," by local author, historian and genealogist Carolyn Leonard, makes a great gift for the avid researcher and beginning family historian.
Leonard encourages readers to have fun with their hobby while learning research methods, exploring basic rules of genealogical evidence and evaluating source materials. A short true story is included in each chapter, followed by how to record and share the information.
Research begins with yourself, working backward to your parents and grandparents. Suggested places to search for information at home include the family Bible, scrapbooks, newspapers, family heirlooms, legal papers, old photos and journals.
The two basic charts used for recording data are the ancestor chart and family group sheet. These charts plus other charts for recording information are available for free download from [...]. Click on "free stuff" in the upper right-hand corner of the page and scroll down the selection of charts. Click on the link to download and print the chart.
Next, the author recommends writing a "memoir" about yourself before interviewing relatives so you will know what to "ask, listen for and record" when conducting the interview. The chapter includes suggestions for writing your own history.
The book also provides basic, easy-to-read information about census records, old handwriting, dating old photographs, recording sources and getting organized. Once these sources have been explored, continue by posting queries in genealogical publications where ancestors lived and researching online.
Cyndi's List of Genealogical Sites on the Internet, [...], provides an alphabetical index and links to genealogical research Web sites. [...] is one site that hosts mailing lists for posting queries. Leonard encourages researchers to visit courthouses, libraries and cemeteries in areas where ancestors lived to obtain copies of their land, marriage, court, church and cemetery records.
The 238-page paperback book is available for [...] plus postage and can be ordered online from [...], amazon.com or [...]; or ordered by telephone from (940) 395-2836. For an autographed copy, e-mail the author at [...].
