5.0 out of 5 stars Book encourages a nurturing Daddy June 14, 2007
By MKI Mom
Format:Board book|Verified Purchase
"Daddy Hugs" is one of the only baby-toddler books I've seen out there about Dads that doesn't focus on the stereotypical "macho-man" Daddy roles (like building a tree house or going camping/fishing). This is a great book for Daddies to read to their little ones that reinforces a more modern, nurturing Daddy. In the book, Karen Katz counts 10 different ways Dads can give their babies hugs (i.e.: kissing boo-boos, burping, getting ready for bed, first steps, playing hide-and-seek, dancing on Daddy's feet, etc.) The board book format makes this a great gift to give to new Dads, to incourage the ritual of reading to baby. Great way for new Dads who may even be a bit nervous about their new role to bond with their babies and see just how special that relationship can be.

5.0 out of 5 stars A darling book for dads and babies October 15, 2007
Format:Board book|Verified Purchase
My husband and I both love reading this sweet book to our 6-month-old son. It shows different ways a dad shows his love for a baby of indeterminate gender ("finger hugs," "make it better" hugs, etc.)

As with all Karen Katz's books, the illustrations are darling. (The baby and the kitty are especially cute!) It's also very colorful and seems to really hold our son's attention.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dad's are important too! August 23, 2005
Format:Hardcover
The book is nicely illustrated with great use of colors. My daughter loves looking at "daddy and herself" in the story. Children quickly identify with the playing and hugging activity. It also helps them with numbers and counting. This book is a great way to spend some quality time with your son or daughter.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Daugher Loves this Book! July 12, 2006
Format:Hardcover
My husband reads this book to our daughter before bed. I bought this when she was 6 months old. She is now almost 1 year and she excitedly points to this book for bedtime storytime. The only other book she also gets excited about is "Mommy Kisses". Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Cute book for toddlers. July 5, 2006
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This is a great book that focuses on time with daddy. Most baby/toddler books focus around the mommy. This is refreshing! The pages are made of a shiny-like paper, so I'd recommend this for a toddler over the age of 14 months, so no accidental ripping occurs. The illustrations are cute, so the child can understand what's going on without reading the words. My daughter's favorite page is when the daddy kisses the baby's boo-boo. The actions between the daddy and the baby are general enough that any family can relate.

4.0 out of 5 stars Daddy Loves Daddy Hugs! February 11, 2010
Format:Board book|Verified Purchase
I got this as a present to my husband from our daughter for Christmas. It was his favorite present by far. There aren't a whole lot of "Daddy" books out there so I was happy to find one. The pictures are eye catching, the storyline simple, and the board book pages are perfect since my toddler loves to rip paper like it is going out of style! Get this book for your daddies to read to your babies. They will love!

4.0 out of 5 stars Very lovely way to end the day February 26, 2007
Format:Hardcover
My 17 -month son and husband have such a great cuddle session when reading this book together before bedtime. It is really rare to find a book targeting the softer side of the male role, whether it be for children or adults, so it is a real pleasure to watch them enjoy this book over and over again, during his most formative years. Hopefully it will assist us in our efforts to raise him as a sensitive and warm individual.

More About the Author

Check out my newest book WIGGLE YOUR TOES! A Book to pull, fluff, and wiggle!

I have always been interested in folk art from around the world, Indian miniatures, Mexican ceramics, fabrics, Chagall, Matisse, children's art, and primitive painting, and I love to paint and experiment with pattern, texture, collage and color. The careers I've had--as a costume designer, a quilt maker, a fabric artist, and a graphic designer--have taken all these interests into account. Looking back, I can see that these passions and career choices have played a large part in influencing me to become a children's book author and illustrator.

But most importantly, it was after my husband and I adopted our daughter from Guatemala that I was inspired to do a children's book for her. My first book, Over the Moon, was the story of that magical experience of welcoming our daughter Lena into our lives. I painted, I drew, I collaged, and I wrote, and after working very hard... a beautiful book was born! Twenty-two books later, my daughter--now fourteen years old--still is an inspiration for me.

I am fascinated by babies and little kids. The simplest words and gestures can make them laugh. Sometimes standing in line at the supermarket and watching kids in grocery carts, my best ideas are born.

I am fascinated by people from all over the world and what they look like and how they live and the differences that make us all unique.

When an idea pops into my head I ask these questions:
Will a child want to read this book?
Will a parent want to read this book with their child?
Will this book make a parent and child feel something?
Is there something visual here that will hold a child's interest?
Will a child see something in a different way after reading this book?
If the answer is yes, then I know I'm on the right track.

I am very lucky to get to do what I do. Everyday I go into my studio and have fun. Don't get me wrong, some days are very frustrating. Sometimes the colors are all wrong and the words don't sound right. But after I work at it for a while...and try to do it a different way...and think...and change the words or colors...and try some more...suddenly, there it is--a great page of writing, or a great illustration. And nothing is more satisfying than that.
