Daddy Long Legs,
By Big Reader (Los Angeles, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Daddy-Long-Legs (Paperback)
I received my English mother's velvet covered copy of this lovely book given to her in 1921. It is perfect for reading to young girls, and through early teens. I love it each time I re-read it. A story of an orphanage girl, who sees only the long legs of a top-hatted donor as he leaves. Her good grades have chosen her for a paid education. The book consists of all the letters she writes to this stranger, (monthly letter required) and her life as she grows, and friends she meets. She always hopes he will contact her, and draws cartoons in her letters of what she thinks he looks like.
It's timeless, no sex, drugs, or rock and roll- a true story of life in England around the time of the Titanic (1912) when women had few options.

Fantastic Read!,

I loved this book when I read it in the eighth grade and I love it now that I am 38 years old. The journey of this courageous orphan as she experiences the gift of higher education is interesting, refreshing and eye opening. How different our lives are today, compared with young women of her day. This novel is very simplistic, sweet and funny. I cherish her story every time I read it. This is a perfect book for young/older teens. A parent does not have to be concerned with the contents.

I read this book as a part of a book club I am in. When you read it BE SURE to get the one with the illustrations. Mine did not have any, and I missed a lot of the jokes. In one letter she writes about catching a fish, and draws a picture of a turtle. Very endearing, if you had the illustration...as I didnt, I was like yay, you caught a fish.
Overall great read, very quick, but endearing. |
