Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2–4—A rhyming text and sweeping, humorous acrylic and colored-pencil illustrations introduce Daddy Longlegs, a rambler and roamer who makes his way across the pages of this book, singing the Daddy Longlegs Blues. "He'll scat across your ceiling…/and get funky on your floor./Shake his booty down your hallway/and then shimmy out the door." For the most part, the rhyming cadence works well, but in a few instances it switches, making the rhythm a little awkward to read aloud. A concluding section provides brief information on the history of the blues and its influence on jazz, rock, soul, R&B, and hip-hop. A glossary of blues terms as well as a list of the musical instruments played by Daddy Longlegs are also provided (fiddle, bass guitar, guitar, saxophone, drum percussion instrument, and the piano). This is a fun, visual interpretation of a musical style that can be incorporated into music units.—Mary N. Oluonye, Shaker Heights Public Library, OH

This book captivated my second grader's attention. After I read it to him, he read it over and over to his infant cousin. The baby loved it for its rhythm and illustrations. My son was intrigued by the subject-matter. I loved the fact that he was learning new vocabulary as he read it. He also picked up new facts about daddy long legs from the glossary and facts page. In addition, he now knows that Muddy Waters is more than just a puddle to splash in! The book is filled with musical references to the Blues. A wonderful addition to any home or school library.

THE DADDY LONGLEGS BLUES written by Mike Ornstein and illustrated by Lisa Kopelke is just too darn cute. I had a great time reading it to my son because it has a catchy rhythm, and I'm pretty sure he had a great time listening to it too. I found myself reading it with a very deep voice and almost a jazz-like tone -- the book just lends itself to this, I swear. My son thought the book was hilarious!

I just liked the overall look of this book. The illustrations are precious; and that says a lot since most of the pages have bugs and spiders on them. And I really liked the easy-to-read font and how it appeared in different sizes and different angles. There were few words per page along with bright big pictures so I think even the most active preschooler could sit through the entire story.

Another thing I really enjoyed about THE DADDY LONGLEGS BLUES is that it was actually educational. In the back of the book, the author has a glossary of blues terms -- I even learned a thing or two. In addition, there was a list of musical instruments played by Daddy Longlegs with descriptions of each one. And last but not least, there was a page devoted to explaining Daddy Longlegs spiders. Since I know almost nothing about Daddy Longlegs, I admit that I did find it rather interesting. Plus, I think all of the pages in the back even make this book useful for classroom reading and classroom instruction.

I definitely recommend THE DADDY LONGLEGS BLUES. It's hard not to love Daddy Longlegs and his bluesy beat!

I am about to do a conference in Chicago and I am using this book to share with teachers because I LOVE IT!!! It has poetry, great drawing, wonderful connections to other core subjects and just plain fun. I also add in my own 'book track' which is different musical segments to make the book come ever more alive! Great job!!
