5.0 out of 5 stars A CHILD HUNTED BY THE GESTAPO, April 14, 2009

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Daddy (Hardcover)
This is a gripping story of a remarkable little boy and the secrets that are entrusted to him. For security and safety, nothing is written down but committed to the boy's memory. The setting is Europe when the Nazis hold power and the boy must be hidden from them at all costs. One of the things the boy wants most is to please the adults around him. They are all completely devoted to his welfare while at the same time taking advantage of his mnemonic abilities. His mother drops in to see him when it's safe and he adores her. She truly loves him but also exploits him, all in the name of what his protectors see as the "higher purpose" of their mission. In his heart he yearns to live like a normal boy with a family but has been conditioned almost from birth that he has an important duty to perform. For that reason he is extraordinarily compliant, especially for a child of his high intelligence. But the secrets entrusted to him are so important that even the people who love him the most are compelled to use his ability while protecting him from the Nazi who is obsessed with finding him. As those around him begin to be picked off he has to rely on his on wits to survive until an improbable rescuer comes to his aid. From start to finish, it is a riveting tale of danger to a young protagonist who the reader comes to care about and feel anxiety for. The characters were for the most part finely drawn and the Nazi villain was scary in his fanatical hunt for the boy, almost like a modern Javert. I found the book spellbinding and it immediately met my criteria for grabbing my interest: I find that that unless I really care about the characters, I don't care what happens to them and lose interest in the story. I cared a great deal for the main characters and was captivated from beginning to end. I can't imagine why this hasn't been made into a movie.

I loved reading this book. This book is extensive like Charles Dickens, Oliver Twist. It is a book that should be savored and re-read. Because you will get more details from this book with each re-reading.
I thoroughly enjoyed Thomas Sangster in Entrusted. He is a great young actor. But with the highest respect to the actor, the movie does not hold a candle to Daddy by Loup Durand. Read this book, I cannot say enough good things about the story. I hope it finds a new life as a Kindle book. Thank You Loup Durand for a great story.
