Book Description

April 1990
An up-to-the-minute report on how today's dads are meeting the challenges of single parenthood, offering an enlightening look at the joys, frustrations, and successes of fathers who are raising their children alone.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

It is becoming more common for men to be single parents. Widowers may not remarry; divorced dads seek custody. And while many single-parenting problems are common to both sexes, some are peculiar to single fathers, e.g., dealing with a teenaged daughter or making the necessary adjustment at work, especially when the employer is not sympathetic. Greif explores these and other real-life situations of single fathers. He dispels myths, describes how single fathers have coped, and provides practical advice on topics from housekeeping to dating to dealing with courts and ex-wives. This well-written book provides encouragement and help to single fathers and enlightenment to those who think single parenting is for women only.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Read for Men in This Group, June 3, 2007

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Daddy Track and the Single Father (Hardcover)
I'm not a single father, but as I read this I kept thinking, "I wish every single father could read this." The book is full of anecdotes from single fathers and I think readers with that identity will see themselves in these men and not feel isolated. It's written in an easy style that men of all education levels should be able to understand. It does not disrespect women and shouldn't be deemed as chauvinist merely because it focuses upon a male population.

I would critique the title. They spoke about the "daddy track" at work, but it was not the first or main topic. This book would have been better titled, "The Single Father and the Daddy Track."

This book looks at the diversity of children. It often asks if various phenomena are harder on the children based upon sex or age. However, it treats the single fathers mostly as a monolithic group. Sometimes it'll mention region and class among the fathers, but other identities are ignored. For example, some say that divorce is more controversial among Catholics or Latinos. Do the fathers in those groups take the dissolution of their marriages worse than other husbands? This work mentions mothers who come out as lesbian, but what about fathers who come out as gay?

Again, I think this book would put many men at ease. It may be an idea gift for others who want to show support for fathers who recently became single parents.
